"We lost our intergalactic ships in the first battle and we did not have the resources to build more."
Vanir leader[src]

The Vanir-Wraith war is a war between the Asgard Vanir and the Wraith.

History[]

Prelude[]

Ten thousand years ago, with their race's growing genetic degradation problem, a rogue faction of the Asgard known as the Vanir decided to travel to the Pegasus galaxy and experiment on the human populations there in hopes of finding a cure. The Vanir took advantage of the war between the Ancients and the Wraith to work without interference and eventually managed to find something that enabled them to slow the degradation, but not cure it. However, the Vanir were counting upon the Ancients to win the war, but they lost and the Wraith turned their attention to the Vanir and other advanced races that could pose a threat to them. War[]

Having won their war with the Ancients, the Wraith attacked the Vanir next. The Vanir were caught by surprise and lost their intergalactic ships in the first battle, stranding the Vanir in the Pegasus galaxy as they lacked the resources to build any more. Their situation growing dire and losing the war, the Vanir eventually abandoned their settlements and retreated to a toxic planet where the Wraith would not follow them.

Ten thousand years later, during the Tau'ri-Wraith War, the atmosphere of the Vanir's planet became completely uninhabitable and they were forced back out into the galaxy and resumed their conflict with the Wraith once more. The Vanir eventually located Janus' research outpost and the Attero device, but were unable to activate it. Janus' lab on Atlantis was eventually discovered by Doctors Daniel Jackson and Rodney McKay and the Attero device control key was activated. The Vanir raided Atlantis, stole the control key and kidnapped Jackson and McKay before successfully forcing McKay to activate the Attero device for them. As a result, any Wraith ship that jumped into hyperspace was immediately destroyed. However, the Vanir's actions brought upon them the wrath of the Atlantis expedition as well as the Wraith due to the Attero device's side effect of causing Stargates to explode. During the following battle, two Vanir spaceships were destroyed by a Traveler generational ship and the Attero device was disarmed and later destroyed, foiling the Vanir strategy.
