Prologue[]

INT—DESTINY MESS

[Young enters a meeting where TJ, Scott, Volker, Brody, Park, Wray, Telford, Rush, Eli and several other civilian and military personnel are gathered.]

YOUNG
All right. Somebody say something. How bad is it?

BRODY
It isn't any one thing. It's the accumulation. The ship just wasn't up to fighting a battle like that.

VOLKER
A big chunk of the life-support is still down, too.

SCOTT
Well, you can repair it, right?

BRODY
With what? Even if we knew how, we don't have the spare parts. I mean, I'm talking about things that are broken and burnt out that, that, I don't even know what they do.

VOLKER
Now, if life-support was our only problem, we might be able to figure something out.

BRODY
But there are dozens of systems on the brink of failure. Weapons, shields.

PARK
  Well, they're operating.

BRODY
And at mission-critical levels? We are down to one last everything. There's practically no redundancy.

VOLKER
  Practically no redundancy.

BRODY

(snappily)

Wasn't funny the first three times.

VOLKER
  I'm very tired.

TELFORD
Okay, we know what the problems are. What are the solutions?

PARK
Well, what I think we're trying to say—

RUSH
We make do as best we can and carry on with the mission.

YOUNG
That doesn't sound like that's what they were trying to say.

RUSH
Well, you're talking like we have a choice here.

ELI
  Actually—

RUSH
  Eli, please.

ELI
Ginn and I figured out how to dial the ninth chevron back to Earth while Destiny recharges in a star.

YOUNG
Without blowing up the ship, you mean?

ELI
  Yeah.

RUSH
  No!

TJ

(frustrated, to herself)

Here we go.

RUSH
Look, Eli's solution, however brilliant, fails to consider the thousand things that could go wrong when attempting to open a wormhole in a star.

ELI
I can show you the simulations—

RUSH
More to the point, it could cause the same kind of overload that happened on Icarus.

SCOTT
Well, who cares, if we're not even going to be here?

RUSH
Well, I do, Lieutenant. Along with anyone else who cares to remain aboard this ship.

TELFORD
Rush, come on, man. Nobody in their right mind would stay.

RUSH

(pointing to Young)

You said you understood how important this mission was.

YOUNG
  I did.

RUSH
  So, what's changed?

WRAY
  Nicholas, you know what's changed.

[Young walks over to where Rush is standing.]

YOUNG
Look, I was all aboard with this, you know that. But if the ship can't fly, there is no mission. It's not like we're just giving up here.

RUSH
Well, that's exactly what we're doing.

[Telford also stands and steps towards Rush.]

TELFORD
Well, fortunately for the people on this ship, the decision is not yours to make.

RUSH

(shouting at Telford)

Well, thankfully, it's not your bloody decision either!

YOUNG

(yelling)

Rush!

RUSH

We can get through this.
  (pointing at Volker and Brody)

They are just being defeatist!

YOUNG
My first responsibility is the safety of these people. I'm sorry.

[Rush looks deflatedly at Young.]

RUSH
  Yeah, right.

[Rush walks out the door as the others watch him go.]

OPENING CREDIT

EXT—DESTINY IN FTL

INT—DESTINY BRIDGE

[Greer is alone near the door onto the bridge. Rush arrives.]

GREER

(holding up a hand)

Ah, whoa.

RUSH
  Stand aside, Sergeant.

GREER
  Right. I can't do that. Colonel's orders.

RUSH
  Since when?

GREER
  Just now.

RUSH
  Did he say why?

GREER
  I didn't ask.

RUSH
Okay. Could you tell me where else I've been banned from, save me wasting my time?

GREER
Pretty much any place that you can push buttons.

RUSH
  Ah.

GREER
And I've got people where all the buttons are.

[Rush walks away.]

INT—YOUNG'S QUARTERS

[Young, Wray and Telford are meeting.]

YOUNG
Destiny's course is taking us toward a star roughly eighteen hours ahead, we assume to recharge. We… we should be ready.

WRAY
Oh, we've been ready for a long time.

TELFORD
I'm ready, and I just got here. I can only imagine what it's like for you.

[There is a knock on the door. Young opens it, and Rush is standing there.]

YOUNG
  Hi. We've been expecting you.

RUSH
Well, it seems you can predict my every move.

YOUNG
We had to make sure you didn't lock us out of the dialing programs.

RUSH
  Thought never crossed my mind.

[Rush steps into the room.]

RUSH
I see the elders have gathered.

WRAY

(sighing)

You should know, Eli is using the stones right now to run his calculations by the best people on earth.

RUSH
They'll him what I told him. The work is brilliant, but what works on paper does not necessarily work within a star.

WRAY
Well, Eli said that he's taken that into consideration.

RUSH
Eli is not an astrophysicist. Inside a star there are magnetic fields, enormous pressures, solar flares. Conditions that make events unpredictable by any mathematics. Now, will Eli's connection to Earth work? Possibly.

[Telford walks over towards Rush.]

RUSH
But what happens the moment that wormhole has been established is anybody's guess. It could blow a hole in the fabric of space-time.

TELFORD

(to Young)

He's out of his freaking mind, you know that?

YOUNG

(to Telford)
  All right.
  (to Rush)

So, what are you asking us to do?

RUSH
Let me talk to the crew. At least some of them understand how important it is to remain on this ship.

TELFORD
Nobody is going to agree to that.

RUSH

(to Young)

You say you've no choice but to leave. I've no choice but to stay.

YOUNG
We're going to brief everyone in the gateroom the minute we come out of FTL. You can address them then.

RUSH

(sincerely)

It would carry far more weight if you were standing alongside me.

YOUNG
  I can do that.

[Telford and Wray exchange a disconcerted look.]

RUSH
  Thank you.

[Rush leaves, and Young closes the door.]

TELFORD
  You're not serious.

WRAY
  Oh, I think he is.

EXT—DESTINY IN FTL

INT—DESTINY CONTROL INTERFACE ROOM

[Doctor Lee, wearing Eli's clothing, is looking at a display while Brody and Scott stand nearby.]

BRODY
We've run the simulation a dozen times. It works.

LEE/ELI
So, the gamer came up with power-flow algorithm.

SCOTT
  Eli, yeah.

LEE/ELI
I got to say, you know when we tried to solve this back on Earth, there were a lot of smart people in that room.

BRODY
Yeah, well don't them I said this, but he's arguable the smartest person I've ever met.

[It is now Eli wearing his own clothes, standing where Lee was. He comes back with a start.]

BRODY
  You all right?

ELI
  I'm fine. I'm back.

SCOTT
  What do they say?

ELI

The math works, so we're on.
  (to Brody)

Who was the "smartest person" you were just talking about?

BRODY

(hesitates)

Einstein.

ELI
  Einstein?

BRODY
Yeah. He was…he was pretty smart.

ELI
But don't ever tell him you said that?

SCOTT
All right, come on. Let's go tell the Colonel the news.

[Scott walks out and Eli follows.]

INT—RUSH'S QUARTERS

[Rush is asleep on his bed when Destiny drops out of FTL. He wakes up and looks at the piece of paper he his holding to his chest. He opens a door and steps into the corridor.]

INT—CORRIDOR

[Rush watches people packing cases and going back and forth in preparation for departure.]

INT—GATEROOM

[Young and TJ are standing in the gateroom talking as people fill the room. Rush enters.]

YOUNG
Hey, TJ, can you give us a minute?

TJ
  Yeah.

[TJ goes towards the other people in the room as Young comes over to meet Rush.]

YOUNG
Can you keep this ship flying?

RUSH
  Yeah, with help.

YOUNG
Then I need to know an absolute minimum number of personnel you need to do it.

RUSH
Well, as many as possible, obviously.

YOUNG
  I need a number.

RUSH
  I'll say a dozen.

YOUNG
  Plus you and me?

[Rush looks confused, then the realization of what Young has said hits him.]

RUSH
  No…including us.

YOUNG
  So, ten.

[Rush hesitates, still in some shock.]

RUSH
Yeah. Look, I've written down most of what I intend to say. If you've got anything you might want to add.

[Rush starts to hand Young the piece of paper.]

TELFORD

(over radio)

Everett, is Rush in the gateroom with you?

YOUNG

(into radio)

Yeah, what is it?

TELFORD

(over radio)

I need both of you on the bridge.

RUSH
No, we don't have time for this just now.

YOUNG

(into radio)

David, we were just going to talk to the crew. Can it wait?

TELFORD

(over radio)

Negative. Get up here. Trust me.

YOUNG
  You know, we have time.

RUSH
  Yeah.

[Rush and Young start to walk.]

RUSH

(to himself)

Time they might need to decide.

YOUNG

(to TJ)

Keep everyone here; we'll be right back.

TJ
  Ah, sure.

[TJ, Becker and Wray watch them leave.]

EXT—DESTINY IN SPACE

[Destiny is nearing the star.]

INT—DESTINY BRIDGE

[Young and Rush enter the bridge, where Telford and Volker are waiting.]

YOUNG
  What is it?

VOLKER
It was in orbit around the star. Destiny picked it up when it turned towards us, and then we got the radio broadcast.

RUSH
  From who?

VOLKER
  You.

RUSH
  I don't understand.

TELFORD

Neither do we.
  (pointing to speaker above)

Wait for it.

RUSH
  Wait for what?

ALTERNATE RUSH

(over comms)

I repeat, this is Doctor Nicholas Rush calling the Destiny. I'm aboard the shuttle, headed your way. Please respond.

RUSH
Well, isn't this an interesting turn of events.

YOUNG
  What is this?

RUSH
Well, I wouldn't know, Colonel. How about you tell me?

VOLKER

Well, it's not a recording, if that's what you're thinking.
  (going to control station)

It's a subspace broadcast, and beyond the fact that it sounds exactly like Rush, I can tell that that's our shuttle. And it's on an intercept course.

TELFORD

(pointing at overhead monitor)

Even though according to this, the shuttle is still docked with Destiny.

ALTERNATE RUSH

(over comms)

Again, this is Doctor Rush. I need assistance with the docking procedure. I know you can hear me.

RUSH
  Have we responded yet?

VOLKER
  No, not yet.

RUSH
Well, best not to keep me waiting.

[Rush sits in the command chair and operates the comms.]

RUSH

(into comms)

Hello. This is also Doctor Nicholas Rush. How can we be of assistance?

EXT—SHUTTLE IN SPACE

INT—DESTINY BRIDGE

ALTERNATE RUSH

(over comms)

Tell them not to try and dial Earth. It won't work. If they go through with it, they're all going to die.

YOUNG

(into comms)

This is Colonel Young. Doctor Rush is sitting right next to me.

INT—SHUTTLE

[Alternate Rush, burnt and dirty, is flying the shuttle.]

ALTERNATE RUSH

(into comms)

Well, yes, obviously. We've just spoken. The only reasonable explanation is that, somehow, I've come back through time.

INT—DESTINY BRIDGE

TELFORD

(incredulously)

Reasonable explanation.

ALTERNATE RUSH

(over comms)

I couldn't be sure until I'd seen you dropping out of FTL.

INT—SHUTTLE

ALTERNATE RUSH

(into comms)

Which happened roughly twelve hours ago in my timeline.

INT—DESTINY BRIDGE

YOUNG

(into comms)

And we're supposed to just take your word for this?

INT—SHUTTLE

ALTERNATE RUSH

(into comms)

Shortly after we dropped out of FTL, Colonel, you asked me for a number. I told you ten plus two.

INT—DESTINY BRIDGE

[Rush switches off comms.]

VOLKER
  Twelve?

RUSH
Yes, well calculated Mister Volker, but I think you're missing the point here.

TELFORD
Is that true? Did you just have that conversation?

YOUNG
  Yeah. Yeah, we did.

EXT—DESTINY IN SPACE

[The shuttle is flying toward the ship from the star.]

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[Everybody is standing around expectantly. Wray walks off, TJ, Eli and James are standing together, and Chloe and Scott are standing nearby.]

SCOTT
You know, it's weird. I was completely stoked about this mission.

CHLOE
  Yeah, we all were.

SCOTT
All of a sudden, I can't wait to see my kid.

CHLOE
Wow. Gosh, and I thought the hardest thing was going to be introducing you to my Mom.

SCOTT
Okay, that makes me more nervous than going through the dang 'gate.

ELI
Hey, when we get back, we're all still going to hang out, right?

CHLOE
  Yeah, of course we will.

SCOTT
We will have a reunion every year.

ELI
I was thinking more along the lines of Fridays.

JAMES
Depends on whether you're stationed Earth-side.

ELI
I can guarantee you that Earth will be my station.

CHLOE
  But you're joining Stargate Command.

ELI

(laughing incredulously)

Like they're going to ask me.

TJ

They'll ask you, Eli. You'll be right up there with the other SGC brainiacs, like Doctor Jackson and Colonel Carter and, ah…
  (to James)

What's that guy's name who kept staring at your, ah…

JAMES
  Ouf. McKay.

TJ

(to Eli)

Yeah, McKay. They'll ask you right when we get back.

YOUNG

(over radio)

Lieutenant Scott, come in.

SCOTT

(into radio)

Yes, Sir. Is there a-is there a problem?

YOUNG

(over radio)

Yeah. Join up with Greer, head to shuttle bay two.

[Scott runs out of the gateroom.]

INT—CORRIDOR

[Scott and Greer are jogging along the corridor, weapons at the ready.]

EXT—DESTINY SHUTTLE DOCK

[The shuttle lands on the docking bay and is clamped in place.]

INT—DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Scott and Greer meet at a junction with Young, Telford and Rush. They go to the shuttle bay door.]

YOUNG
  Open it.

[Greer opens the door and he and Scott take aim. Alternate Rush is standing inside the door. He steps into the corridor and lunges at Telford. Scott and Greer grab him.]

SCOTT
  Easy!

ALTERNATE RUSH
Don't listen to him! He's going to try and kill you all!

[Scott and Greer ease the injured Alternate Rush to the floor, while Telford, Young and Rush look on. Everyone is shocked.]

GREER
  What in the hell?

YOUNG

(into radio)

TJ, this is Young.

INT—GATEROOM

TJ

(into radio)

Yes, Sir, the gang's all here.

YOUNG

(over radio)

Yeah, they're going to have to wait. We need you in the infirmary.

[TJ leaves the gateroom, followed by Wray.]

EXT—DESTINY IN SPACE

[The ship is getting closer to the star.]

INT—DESTINY INFIRMARY

[TJ is treating Alternate Rush where he has a deep burn on the side of his face. Telford, Wray, Young and Rush are looking on.]

TJ
How did you get the burn?

ALTERNATE RUSH
There was an overload. I couldn't stop it. Explosions all over the ship, one after another. The air became so toxic, I had no choice but to abandon.

YOUNG
And at which point you somehow went back twelve hours in time?

ALTERNATE RUSH
No, no, that, that would have to happen inside the star. The ship itself must have passed very near a solar flare in the exact moment we locked the nine-chevron address.

[Telford is looking on suspiciously.]

ALTERNATE RUSH
Temporal event, like we've seen cause time travel through wormholes. Somehow affected the entire ship. One of those unpredictable things I remember warning you about.

[Rush smirks.]

ALTERNATE RUSH
And what are you smiling at?

RUSH
  Well, you should know.

ALTERNATE RUSH
What? Fascinating, is it? Well, you wouldn't think so if you'd been through what I've been though.

RUSH
Well, I won't have to now, will I?

WRAY
Look, we can still do this. If-if we could just learn from your mistakes.

ALTERNATE RUSH

(shouting)

My mistakes?! The only mistake was trying it in the first place!

TELFORD
No, no, no wait a second. She's right. Just because it went wrong the first time around—

TJ
Wait, isn't it the same time, again?

RUSH
No, not entirely. We'd end up with two of us staying behind next time. If we kept going long enough, we'd soon have an entire crew.

[Alternate Rush looks at Rush, frowning at his making light of the situation.]

YOUNG
Well, we still have an hour before we run Eli's program. Tell us what happened.

ALTERNATE RUSH
Up to the point you received my radio signal, you know what happened.

ALTERNATE TIMELINE

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

YOUNG
  I need a number.

RUSH
  I'll say a dozen.

YOUNG
  Plus you and me?

RUSH
  No…including us.

YOUNG
  So, ten.

RUSH
Yeah. Look, I've written down most of what I intend to say. If you've got anything you might want to add.

YOUNG
So, I'll speak when you're done. But just so we're clear, if we don't get the ten volunteers…

RUSH
  We will.

YOUNG
  Okay.

END ALTERNATE TIMELINE

INT—DESTINY INFIRMARY

ALTERNATE RUSH
You were true to your word, Colonel. You stood alongside me.

ALTERNATE TIMELINE

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[The crew is gathered. Young is in front of the group, and Rush is standing on the stairs ready to address them.]

YOUNG
Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention, please. Doctor Rush would like to say a few words.

[Everybody looks up at him, expectantly.]

RUSH
  My friends…

[Everyone looks around uncomfortably at the word "friends".]

RUSH
Well, yes, perhaps that's, uh, an overstatement. But we are, at least, shipmates who have, up until now, shared great adversity. I know a lot of you, probably most of you, also share the hope of going home. It is a fact that the conditions inside a star bode very poorly for the sustained viability of a wormhole, and I owe it to you all to tell you that.

[Eli, standing at the front of the gathered crew, looks angry.]

TELFORD
Stop trying to scare people and get on with this.

RUSH
The Ancients did not devote the efforts of an entire generation to build this ship on a whim. Neither was Destiny named on a whim. Over a million years ago, the Ancients discovered the complex structure buried deep within the background radiation. The fingerprints of an intelligence that existed very near the beginning of time itself. Destiny was launched in search of that intelligence. Who knows how close we are to finding it. How close we are to learning, in the Ancients' words, "the destiny of all things." I don't pretend to know when that's going to be, in which stars it will happen, or even how that will change our view of the universe. I only know that Destiny has come this far and if we abandon her now, there'll be no coming back. All of that knowledge will be lost, forever. I believe this journey is the reason I'm here, but I can't hope to do it alone. I ask you to come with me.

YOUNG
Now, I, uh, I believe that those of you who want to go home deserve that chance. But I joined Stargate Command for a reason so, I too am willing to stay aboard. What we are looking for are ten volunteers, so I am asking: those of you who want to be here, please step forward.

[Greer steps forward immediately and goes to stand behind Young. Volker considers for a moment, exchanges a look with Brody and Park, then steps forward, followed by TJ, Chloe, Scott and James, Varro and two other Lucian Alliance members, another Marine then, finally, Eli, somewhat bitterly. Telford steps up onto the stairs on the opposite side of the room to Rush.]

TELFORD
All, right, listen to me! You've already accomplished the damn mission! Our goal was to investigate the ninth chevron address and you've done that. Now, I do not deny that there once was a mission, but if it was as important as Rush claims it to be, they sure as hell couldn't expect us to do it. There is no noble voyage to save the universe or to meet God or whatever it is that Rush has sold you on! There is only the day that this ship dies.

YOUNG
  David. We don't know that.

TELFORD
I've got a good mind to try to take you all back by force.

GREER
  Good luck with that.

[There is a moment's silence while they consider each other. Telford turns to face the rest of the crew.]

TELFORD
Those of you still taking part in the evacuation are going to form two lines. Everything we carry with us becomes a projectile in a nine-chevron transit, so we are going home with the clothes on our backs, nothing more. Eli has warned them to expect us, but it seems that a radio signal does not reach across a nine-chevron connection. So I'll go first, to warn them that we're on our way. You will follow at three second intervals, two at a time. Eli, are we ready?

ELI
Yeah, the program's all set. You're good to go.

TELFORD
Fifteen minutes, people. And we go home!

END ALTERNATE TIMELINE

INT—DESTINY INFIRMARY

ALTERNATE RUSH
And fifteen minutes after that, you were dead.

TELFORD
If all those people stayed aboard, why were you the only survivor?

ALTERNATE RUSH
I told you, there was an overload.

WRAY

(to Telford)
It doesn't matter. We have a second chance now!
  (to Alternate Rush)

You just need to tell us what went wrong, what we can do differently.

ALTERNATE RUSH
Eli's program is based on precise timing in the recharging process.

RUSH
A time which is fast approaching.

YOUNG
All right, so you dialed the ninth chevron. And?

ALTERNATE RUSH
It worked. We made the connection.

ALTERNATE TIMELINE

EXT—DESTINY DIVING INTO THE STAR

[Destiny approaches the corona; the power cells are lowered, and the ship dips under the surface of the star.]

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[The crew is gathered around the Stargate, which is slowly spinning as the chevrons engage. Rush and Eli are controlling it from the two consoles at the rear of the room.]

ELI

(excitedly)

Chevron nine is locked!

[The wormhole kawooshes into life, and Telford immediately strides towards the Stargate.]

TELFORD
Wait three seconds then follow me!

[Telford steps through the event horizon, and the rest of the crew step closer, but as soon as he has gone through, the wormhole begins to destabilize. Eli's smile fades as an alarm sounds on Rush's console.]

RUSH
  No, no, wait! Wait!

YOUNG

(yelling)
  Stop!
  (to Rush)

What is it?

RUSH
The wormhole's unstable. See for yourself.

YOUNG
  Well, shut it down.

RUSH
  I can't!

ELI
One of the mains blew out. My program can't compensate. We'll have to configure the power levels on the fly.

RUSH
Yes, Eli. That's what I'm doing. I've almost got it.

YOUNG

(yelling)

Everybody stand by!

[Data is scrolling past on the console screens.]

ELI
That's as stable as we're going to get.

[Young looks to Rush, who nods agreement.]

YOUNG

(yelling)

Okay, go! Go! Go!

[The crew stampede towards the Stargate, knocking each other over, trampling each other in the rush to get through. The ship lurches, and Eli appears worried.]

EXT—DESTINY IN THE STAR

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[An alarm is sounding on Rush's console.]

RUSH
  It's beginning to overload.

ELI
Well, we were supposed to be gone by now!

RUSH
We can't stay ahead of this!

[The ship rocks violently as the last of the crew push their way through to the Stargate.]

RUSH
  We're losing her!

YOUNG

(yelling)

That's it, everyone. We're going through! Let's go!

SCOTT
All right, you heard him! Let's go! Come on!

[The personnel who had chosen to stay run towards the Stargate. Greer remains after everyone else but Young and Eli have gone through.]

RUSH
Eli, there's nothing more you can do.

EXT—DESTINY IN THE STAR

[The ship is shuddering, and there is a series of explosions across the rear.]

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

YOUNG
Eli, get the hell out of here!

[Eli picks up a kino and runs for the Stargate.]

YOUNG
  Rush.

RUSH
I can't maintain a stable connection and argue with you at the same time. Now please go.

[Young hesitates.]

RUSH
  Go!

[Young and Greer make it through the Stargate just before the wormhole disengages.]

[Rush looks at the Stargate in despair. He walks to the middle of the now empty gateroom and stands there clutching his head.]

ALTERNATE RUSH

(voice)

I don't really know how long I stayed there…

END ALTERNATE TIMELINE

INT—DESTINY INFIRMARY

ALTERNATE RUSH
It felt like hours. I kept waiting for the end to come, but Destiny fought to stay alive.

WRAY
How are you sure that we…they all didn't make it?

ALTERNATE RUSH
Oh, I didn't say they all didn't make it.

[He looks around pointedly at Telford.]

ALTERNATE TIMELINE

INT—DESTINY STONE LAB

[Rush is making his way amid numerous explosions to the stone lab. He opens the box, activates the tablet and places a stone on it.]

INT—STARGATE COMMAND STONE LAB

[Rush is sitting in the chair by the tablet. Major Peterson is standing in front of him.]

RUSH/TELFORD
I'm Doctor Rush. How many of them made it through?

MAJOR PETERSON
I'm sorry sir, only one. Hours ago. He's been waiting to switch with someone to see why the others didn't follow.

[On the monitor screen, Telford's face looks angrily back at Rush.]

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[Telford/Rush runs into the gateroom. A Klaxon is sounding. Telford/Rush looks around in horror.]

END ALTERNATE TIMELINE

INT—DESTINY INFIRMARY

ALTERNATE RUSH
The connection was made, but you were the only one that made it through to Earth.

INT—GATEROOM

[Varro comes over to where Scott, Greer and James are standing.]

VARRO
We were told we'd be leaving for Earth by now. What's happening?

GREER
  Some funky, funky stuff, man.

YOUNG

(over radio)

Lieutenant Scott, come in.

SCOTT

(into radio)

Sir, you are cutting it awful close here.

INT—INFIRMARY

YOUNG

(into radio)

Stand down, Lieutenant. We've decided not to go ahead.

INT—GATEROOM

[Brody and Park have overheard.]

BRODY
You've got to be kidding me.

SCOTT

(into radio)

We have reason to believe the evacuees will not make it through alive.

INT—INFIRMARY

YOUNG

(into radio)

Send everyone to their quarters.

INT—GATEROOM

SCOTT

(into radio)

Understood.

[People are confused and disappointed and start to leave the gateroom.]

INT—INFIRMARY

ALTERNATE RUSH
  You made the right decision.

RUSH
  Yeah, about bloody time.

TELFORD
I want to use the stones to confirm his story.

YOUNG
Well, we've never used a stone inside a star, and I don't think now's the time to start it. But I'll tell you what, you can go talk to yourself once we're safely on the other side.

WRAY

(wryly)

Hmm. Safely.

YOUNG
I think now, we all need to be on the bridge.

[Young gets up and walks out.]

RUSH
Oh well. At least I'll have someone to engage in a decent conversation.

[Alternate Rush looks at Rush blankly.]

INT—BRIDGE

[Telford, Young, Rush and Alternate Rush are on the bridge. As the bridge section rises, the windows are uncovered to reveal the Alternate Destiny floating in space near the star.]

TELFORD
  There it is.

YOUNG
  Well, I think that's confirmation, don't you?

RUSH
  We're altering course and accelerating.

ALTERNATE RUSH
We'll be close enough to get a decent look at it.

EXT—DESTINY IN SPACE

[Destiny flies slowly towards the Alternate Destiny.]

INT—DESTINY OBSERVATION DECK

[Brody, Chloe, Eli, Scott, James and numerous other personnel are on the observation deck looking out at the wreckage of the Alternate Destiny as they slowly pass it.]

SCOTT
There but for the grace of God, huh?

ELI
It's my fault. Everybody on that ship died because of me.

CHLOE
Yeah, well, the only reason we were even in this situation was because you were all trying to save me.

BRODY
Do you guys see what I see?

JAMES
  What?

BRODY
The damage is confined mostly to the engineering spaces. The main living compartments look intact.

PARK
  So?

BRODY
  I got an idea.

[Brody runs from the observation deck.]

INT—CORRIDOR

[Brody is running along the corridor past other personnel.]

BRODY
Out of the way. Out of the way! Move, move, move.

[He runs into a lift and closes the door.]

INT—BRIDGE

YOUNG
You just said it was falling back toward the star.

RUSH
  That was me, actually.

YOUNG
  Okay.

ALTERNATE RUSH
I'm telling you, we need to get over to that ship.

TELFORD
It might be worth the risk if we can salvage ammunition, food, supplies—

[Brody runs onto the bridge.]

BRODY
No, no. That's not what he's talking about.

YOUNG
  Well, what is it then?

BRODY

(out of breath)

Spare parts. I had the same idea. I ran the whole way, too, so…

[Young holds up his radio and shoes it to Brody.]

BRODY
  Hmm!

TELFORD
How much time do we have before we're out of range?

YOUNG
Well, we can't take a shuttle. The other ship is too close to the star, and Destiny is accelerating away.

ALTERNATE RUSH
We can arrange a short FTL jump. Use the Stargate.

TELFORD
It's the same 'gate. Can it dial itself?

BRODY

(still out of breath)
I don't see why not. Destiny's address isn't based on a fixed point in space. We'll have to input the distance calculation, but you…
(looking at Alternate Rush and Rush)

…guys should be able to work that out, right?

RUSH
Yeah, between me, Eli and me.

YOUNG
All right, well let's, ah, let's start putting together a list.

BRODY
  Yeah.

[Brody walks away.]

TELFORD
I'd like to lead the team over there.

ALTERNATE RUSH
I should go as well. I'm the only one who knows which systems were affected by the overload.

YOUNG
Listen, Rush. I don't even know if that's what I should call you.

ALTERNATE RUSH
  Well it is my name.

YOUNG
Fine. What I'm trying to say is that you've been through hell and back. You don't got to do this.

TELFORD
The man wants to help, Everett. Let him help. We're going to need all hands for this.

[Young looks to Rush, who nods, then back to Alternate Rush.]

YOUNG
  Okay.

EXT—DESTINY IN FTL

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[The crew are gathered and are being addressed by Brody, Park, Volker, Telford and Young.]

BRODY

(holding up two parts)

These are priority number one. We want as many as we can get our hands on. This one's burnt out, this one's good. Now, they're in every console, power relay and pretty much every piece of equipment aboard the ship.

[Alternate Rush is watching Rush work at the console.]

BRODY
Open them up, pull them out and move on.

GREER
What do you call those things?

BRODY
I don't know. Things that make it go.

PARK
We should find concentrations of working parts in the bridge, control interface and neural interface rooms.

BRODY

(holding up another part)

Number two, these things. And don't ask me what they're called, I'm not even sure how they work.

VOLKER
We also have to get our hands on the other repair robot and shield emitter relays.

TELFORD
We'll get everything on the list. If there's still time, we'll move on to our secondary objectives.

TJ
And how much time to we have?

TELFORD
We'll assess that once we're aboard.

YOUNG
Conditions will be difficult, they will be dangerous, but make no mistake. We need to salvage these things if we are going to survive.

[Destiny drops out of FTL.]

YOUNG
Dial the 'gate! Everyone step back.

[The wormhole opens with a kawoosh.]

YOUNG
  Send the kino.

[Eli operates the kino control, and it flies through the event horizon. On his monitor, he checks the gateroom control console and takes a look around the room.]

ELI
It's getting hot already, but the air is still breathable. I'd call it a green light.

YOUNG
  Let's move.

[Eli, Wray and Young watch as most of the crew pass through the Stargate, Rush and Alternate Rush bringing up the rear.]

EXT—ALTERNATE DESTINY NEAR THE STAR

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY GATEROOM

[Everyone is in the gateroom. The light is red, and a klaxon is sounding. Alternate Rush, Rush and Park go to the control consoles.]

TELFORD
Form into your teams and stand by.

ALTERNATE RUSH
Okay, I'm reading power and life support in both the bridge and control interface room.

RUSH
Forty minutes until the shield fails.

TELFORD

Then that's the time we have.
  (to Scott)

Lieutenant that means your teams heads straight to the armory.

SCOTT
  Got it.

[Scott, Greer and several marines move out.]

TELFORD
You know your assignments, let's go!

[People leave the gateroom in groups.]

TELFORD

(into radio)

This is Telford. We are proceeding. Forty minutes on the clock.

ALTERNATE RUSH

(to Park and Rush)

Okay, let's go!

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

YOUNG

(into radio)

David, be careful.

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY GATEROOM

TELFORD

(into radio)

Will do.

[Everyone else has left the gateroom, and Telford heads out.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDORS

[There are no lights, but there are sparks showering from the ceiling as the teams make their way to their assignments.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY FOOD STORES

[Chloe and her team arrive at the food stores and begin filling packs.]

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

WRAY
Someone should report to Homeworld Command. Explain what's been going on.

YOUNG
Well, you go ahead. And when you're back, you can explain it to me.

[Wray leaves the gateroom.]

ELI
They must think we're all dead.

YOUNG
  It didn't happen.

ELI
  Yeah, it did.

YOUNG
  Not to us, Eli.

ELI
You can say anything you like, tell me to take one timeline at a time, but if Rush wasn't sent back by a freak of physics, we'd all be dead by now.

[Young checks his watch and looks towards the Stargate.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY ARMORY

[Scott's team make their way to the armory, where they load up gurneys with weapons. There is a great deal of shouting orders from numerous people.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY BRIDGE

[Volker and Brody and some other personnel arrive on the bridge. It is in darkness apart from the glow of the sun through the windows, and there is an alarm sounding. They go to the various control panels.]

VOLKER
  I'll start here.

BRODY
Okay, let's make this quick. Spread out. Over here guys.

[They pull parts from control panels.]

VOLKER
Will you try to get that alarm off?

[Brody operates the command chair controls, and the alarm stops.]

EXT—ALTERNATE DESTINY IN SPACE

[There is a series of large explosions near the rear of the ship.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY BRIDGE

[The bridge is rocked by the explosions.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY INFIRMARY

[TJ's team arrives at the infirmary, where they load up bedsheets with supplies.]

TJ
  Start at the back!

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Varro's team is walking along a corridor. Varro opens it and has to jump clear of a fireball that bursts through the doorway. The door closes again.]

VARRO
I guess we're not going in there.

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY HYDROPONICS LAB

[Becker's team arrive at the hydroponics lab and load plants into packs.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CONTROL INTERFACE ROOM

[Rush, Alternate Rush and Park are collecting equipment from the control interface room controls and central core.]

PARK
So this must be pretty weird for you two, huh?

ALTERNATE RUSH

(brusquely)

Yes.

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY BRIDGE

VOLKER
Half of the ones I'm pulling are burnt out from the overload.

BRODY
I'll take what we can get. Go get your CO2 nodes. We need to breathe, too.

[Volker heads for the door.]

VOLKER

(to a Marine by the door)

Pennell, you're with me.

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Telford slides down a ladder into a corridor. There are sparks showering from the ceiling.]

TELFORD

(into radio)

That's half-time. Start packing it up!

[Telford runs along the corridor where he meets one of the teams.]

TELFORD
Get back to the Stargate, as quickly as you can. Go!

[Telford continues along the corridor in the direction from which the team had come.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY ARMORY

SCOTT
  Getting hot, huh?

JAMES
  Yeah, it's a dry heat.

EXT—ALTERNATE DESTINY NEAR THE STAR

[The ship is drifting closer to the star. There are more explosions in the ship's aft sections.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY ARMORY

[The armory is rocked by the explosions.]

SCOTT
All right, that's it. We're out of here.

GREER
  Move!

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Telford encounters another team.]

TELFORD
Get back to the gateroom. Double time.

[He goes down another corridor to where Chloe's team is packing up food supplies.]

TELFORD
  How are we doing?

[Chloe shows him two boxes of food.]

CHLOE
  We eat tonight.

TELFORD
  Excellent. Get out of here.

CHLOE

(to her team)

Pack it up. Come on, let's go.

[They head down the corridor towards the gateroom.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY INFIRMARY

TJ
All right, that's it, let's go!

[The team make their way out of the infirmary carrying bundles of supplies.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Another team is running along a corridor carrying supplies.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Alternate Rush, Rush and Park and some other personnel are going along a corridor. Alternate Rush sees a panel of tubes on the wall and stops.]

ALTERNATE RUSH
  What do you think?

RUSH
I think it's not on the list.

[Alternate Rush goes and takes the cover off the panel.]

ALTERNATE RUSH
It'll double the amount of weapons that we can bring online.

RUSH

(to Park)

Do we even have time for this?

PARK

(into radio)

Colonel, we've come across a piece of equipment that could significantly increase our weapons capability, but we're up against the clock.

TELFORD

(over radio)

For that, we should risk it.

ALTERNATE RUSH

(removing his shoulder pack)

For once, he agrees with me.

[Alternate Rush start to attempt to remove one of the tubes.]

RUSH
Look, I'll go and I'll bring back the proper tools. Be careful not to touch the damaged one. About a thousand volts running through that.

ALTERNATE RUSH

(testily)

Do you think I might know that?

[Rush looks frustrated then turns and leaves. Park follows him. Alternate Rush unplugs a power cable from one of the tubes and goes to remove it but notices somebody behind him. Turning around, he sees Telford approaching.]

TELFORD
Didn't mean to sneak up on you. This is it?

ALTERNATE RUSH
Yeah. The others took the parts we had back to the gateroom. My younger self is coming back to help, but I don't want to wait for him.

TELFORD
You don't trust him either, huh?

[Alternate Rush ignores the remark and continues to work.]

TELFORD
  So, what went wrong?

ALTERNATE RUSH
  What are you talking about?

TELFORD
Not that I think you would kill them all deliberately—

[Alternate Rush stands up angrily.]

ALTERNATE RUSH
  I tried to save them!

[Telford steps forward so the are standing face to face.]

TELFORD
You don't think I buy that story? Rush, valiantly keeping the 'gate open while the ship explodes all around him?

ALTERNATE RUSH
I don't care what you think.

TELFORD
It wouldn't be the first time you sabotaged the ship to make an ass out of me, would it? Last time we tried to dial Earth from inside a star comes to mind, among others. So, what went wrong?

ALTERNATE RUSH
  The wormhole was unstable!

TELFORD
I'm talking about what really happened.

ALTERNATE RUSH
Their blood is on your hands, not mine.

TELFORD

(shouting)
They would have all made it home but you…
(prodding Alternate Rush in the chest)

…did something!

ALTERNATE RUSH

(shouting)

I was trying to buy them some time!

TELFORD

(shouting, still with his forefinger in Alternate Rush's chest)

Oh, and there is not a single person left alive to confirm—

[Alternate Rush shoves Telford away from him.]

ALTERNATE RUSH

(shouting)

Take your hands off of me!

[Telford stumbles backwards into the panel of tubes on the wall.]

ALTERNATE RUSH

(shouting)

You're the coward! You're the one that didn't believe in the mission! You're the one that killed them!

[Alternate Rush stops speaking when he realizes that something is wrong. He sees that Telford is stuck against the panel, his eyes wide, shuddering with the electricity coursing through him. Alternate Rush gasps and steps forward, holding out his hands as if to attempt to pull Telford free, but realizing he can't touch him safely. He puts his hands to his own face in horror.]

ALTERNATE RUSH

(into his hands)

Oh, no!

[Alternate Rush steps back as there is a loud pop and some sparks, then Telford's lifeless body falls to the floor. Wisps of smoke rise from the body.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY GATEROOM

[The gateroom is full of people and equipment ready to be taken back to Destiny. Scott and his team enter.]

SCOTT
  All right, right over here.

[Scott leads his team to a clear spot by the Stargate. Rush enters.]

SCOTT
Hey Rush, where's your other, ah—

RUSH
He's found something for the weapons system.

SCOTT
  There's no time!

[Rush removes his pack and picks up a piece of equipment.]

RUSH
We still have time. I'm just going back to help him.

[Rush trots away.]

SCOTT

All right, I'll go with you.
  (to someone else)

Dial the 'gate and keep it open for us. TJ, get these people out of here.

[Scott follows Rush out.]

TJ

(calling after Scott)
  Don't stay too long!
  (to the crew)

All right, everybody move out, we're going to dial the 'gate.

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[Eli and Young are at the control console when the Stargate activates.]

ELI
  They're dialing back.

[Wray enters.]

YOUNG
  That was fast.

WRAY
I wasn't finished reporting. But when Colonel Telford found out that we were still here, he insisted that he be allowed to use the stones to switch with someone. Preferably himself.

ELI
  That's weird.

YOUNG
Yeah, well that can wait. At least they know we're alive.

[The wormhole engages.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Colonel Telford's body is still lying on the floor. Alternate Rush is looking at him, distraught.]

ALTERNATE RUSH
  Oh, no!

[Alternate Rush looks around, hits the wall in despair, then opens a door to another corridor and leaves.]

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[The personnel are bringing equipment on board through the open Stargate. There are boxes and crates littering the floor as people sort things. Young is walking amongst them.]

YOUNG

(into radio)

Lieutenant Scott, where the hell are you?

SCOTT

(over radio)

Going after something that's supposed to double the weapons capability, Sir.

YOUNG
Negative. You don't have time for that. I need you to locate Colonel Telford. He's not answering his radio.

SCOTT

(over radio)

Roger that, Sir. We're…

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Rush and Scott round the corner into the corridor where Telford's body lies on the floor.]

SCOTT

(into radio)

…coming right ar—

[Rush and Scott stop in their tracks when they see Telford's body.]

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

YOUNG

(into radio)

Scott, say again. You were cut off.

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

SCOTT

(into radio)

We found the Colonel, Sir. He's dead.

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[Eli, Wray, Greer, James look at Young when they hear the news.]

YOUNG

(into radio)

Where's Rush?

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

SCOTT

(into radio)

He's right beside me. I don't know where the other one is.

RUSH
  I do.

[Rush drops the tool he was carrying and runs off down the corridor that Alternate Rush left through earlier.]

SCOTT

(calling after Rush)
  Hey, hey, hey! Rush!
  (into radio)

Sir, Rush just ran off on me.

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

YOUNG

(into radio)

Let him go.

SCOTT

(over radio)

Sir!

YOUNG

(into radio)

You only have a few minutes before the shield fails. Let him go. That is an order, Lieutenant.

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Scott looks at Telford's body again then runs back the way they had come.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Rush is running along the corridor, showers of sparks bursting from the ceiling.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CHAIR ROOM

[Rush runs in and finds Alternate Rush standing in front of the chair. There is the sound of explosions in the background.]

ALTERNATE RUSH
  It was an accident.

RUSH
I believe you. But they won't.

ALTERNATE RUSH
  No.

RUSH
Tell me, when you, ah, dialed Earth… What really happened?

ALTERNATE RUSH
  I told you what happened.

[Rush nods.]

RUSH
And so now you're trying to decide whether or not to sit in that chair.

ALTERNATE RUSH
Well, wouldn't you, in my place?

RUSH
I'm not sure if even the knowledge of the Ancients can help you now.

ALTERNATE RUSH
Well, I really don't have anything to lose at this point. Imagine what I could learn.

RUSH
Well, you won't have much time.

ALTERNATE RUSH
Well, time's relative. We've just proved that, haven't we?

RUSH
So what are you waiting for?

ALTERNATE RUSH

(pleadingly)

I need your help.

[Rush nods sadly and goes to the control console. Alternate Rush looks at the chair for a moment then sits in it.]

ALTERNATE RUSH
  Thank you.

RUSH
  Goodbye.

[Rush activates the chair, the clamps move into place around Alternate Rush's ankles and wrists, then he closes his eyes as the neural interface is connected to his temples. As the interface activates, Alternate Rush is bathed in a bright white light. Rush stands in front of him for a moment before leaving the room.]

EXT—ALTERNATE DESTINY NEAR THE STAR

[The ship falls closer to the star, numerous explosions occurring on the hull.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CHAIR ROOM

[Alternate Rush sits in the chair while Rush runs away along the corridor outside, explosions almost knocking him over. A mist descends from the ceiling above the chair.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CORRIDOR

[Rush runs as bursts of sparks and flames shoot from the ceiling and walls.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY GATEROOM

[Scott is standing by the still-open Stargate, his arm in the event horizon. Rush runs in just as a large explosion occurs in the corridor outside.]

SCOTT

(shouting and waving his other arm)

Come on! Come on! Come on!

[Rush runs for the even horizon.]

INT—ALTERNATE DESTINY CHAIR ROOM

[Alternate Rush sits in the chair, the mist descending. The white light turns to yellow.]

EXT—ALTERNATE DESTINY NEAR THE STAR

[Alternate Destiny falls backwards, disappearing into the star.]

INT—DESTINY GATEROOM

[Rush and Scott fall through the wormhole. Rush lands on the floor. Young is standing in front of the Stargate, and Eli comes hurrying over. Scott leans down to Rush.]

SCOTT
  You're welcome!

[Rush is handed a water canteen, and TJ crouches down beside him.]

RUSH
  I'm okay, I'm okay.

[Rush drinks deeply. Scott goes to Chloe and they embrace.]

WRAY
  Nicholas?

RUSH
  Yeah.

WRAY
  Where's the other Rush?

RUSH
  I don't know.

YOUNG
You told Scott you knew where he went.

RUSH
I was wrong. I went looking for him, couldn't find him.

YOUNG
Well, maybe he decided to go down with the ship.

RUSH
  Doesn't sound like me.

YOUNG
Still, you must, ah, you must be pleased about one thing.

RUSH
  What's that?

YOUNG
Well, we can, we can fix the ship. Get on with the mission.

RUSH
Yeah, of course. Get on with the mission.

[Young walks away and Eli looks at him wonderingly. Wray looks at Rush then walks away.]

FADE OUT
