"They created a bubble in space around the Replicators within which time was slowed down by a factor of…?"
"Ten to the fourth power.
"
Samantha Carter and Thor[src]

The Time dilation device was a device of Asgard design, conceived to artificially change the normal passage of time. The device was capable of generating a field radius of point-one-six light years. Within the bubble, time could be slowed down by a factor of ten to the fourth power. This means that one year within the time dilation field would be 10,000 years for everyone else (an hour would be over a year, and so on).

History[]

During the Asgard-Replicator war, the Asgard summoned the Replicators to the planet Hala and trapped them in a time dilation field. In 2003, SG-1 traveled to the planet to ensure the device was activated properly. However, the Replicators managed to stop the time-dilation device and used it to increase time for themselves, thriving and replicating many thousands of times. SG-1 managed to bring the device back online, trapping the replicators within the field. (SG1: "Unnatural Selection")

In 2004, the planet was destroyed when Hala's sun was collapsed into a black hole by the Asgard. This was done in an attempt to destroy the Replicators before they could escape the time dilation field, as the device was only a temporary measure. This plan was later proven to be a mistake as the Replicators managed to use the device to escape the black hole's gravity, fleeing into hyperspace. (SG1: "New Order, Part 1")

Alternate SG-1s[]

In 2006 when several alternate SG-1s came through the Stargate, several Samantha Carters came up with a plan to detonate a charge inside a singularity to try and force the rift in the multiverse to close. The only way this could be done was to use a time dilation device, which was delivered by the Asgard—presumably to get close enough to the black hole to launch the explosive device, as time slows down in close proximity to a singularity. This plan was never used as another solution was later discovered. (SG1: "Ripple Effect")

Asgard computer core[]

The Odyssey in a time dilation field, saving it from destruction

In 2007 when the Asgard upgraded the Odyssey before their death, they installed a computer core on the ship, which had time dilation technology built right into it. Knowing this, Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter was able to create a time dilation "bubble" around the Odyssey moments before its destruction at the hands of an Ori warship. After spending fifty years inside the field, they were able to reverse it, sending them back to the moment in which they activated the device. (SG1: "Unending")
