After Lt. Dean Barber kills himself by the Stargate's unstable vortex and the rest of his team are mysteriously dying, SG-1 links the team's routine mission to P4X-347 to be responsible, as they find a highly beautiful, yet very addictive light.
SG-5 along with Dr. Daniel Jackson discovers a deserted Goa'uld palace on P4X-347. One of the rooms in the palace contains a pedestal that generates a huge, cascading light show that mesmerizes everyone.
Back on Earth, Major Samantha Carter along with Lt. Dean Barber from SG-5 prepare to leave for the planet, but Barber commits suicide by running into the energy vortex of the unstable wormhole. As a result, the rest of SG-5 and Jackson are recalled from the planet. As usual, Jackson is impatient to return to the planet to continue working on various devices and translations within the palace. As the day progress, Jackson gets more frustrated and decides that he needs to return to P4X-347 to continue work. Colonel Jack O'Neill tells him that they will return the next morning, and Major General George S. Hammond refuses to send him earlier.
The next morning, Daniel fails to report in, and when Jack investigates, he finds Daniel moments away from committing suicide from depression. Jack is able to stop him and later takes him to the SGC infirmary where Dr. Janet Fraiser detects a significantly low level of neural activity that appears to be drug withdrawal. The rest of SG-5 is also displaying similarly low levels of neural activity.
While Jackson is in the infirmary, the rest of SG-1 go to the planet and discover the same room with the light show. The three of them are hypnotized by it, although Carter is not able to detect any other form of radiation. As the team continues to explore the palace, they find a young boy, Loran. He claims that his parents have left, but will return soon. SG-1 takes various environmental samples, along with blood samples from Loran and O'Neill returns to Earth to deliver them to Dr. Fraiser.
Within a short amount of time, O'Neill begins to exhibit similar symptoms as SG-5. Jackson is continuing to deteriorate and the rest of SG-5 has already succumbed to the symptoms and ultimately died from the effects. As Daniel's neural activity continues to drop, Dr. Fraiser has no choice but to send him back to the planet and hope that whatever is in the palace will be able to save him. Once he reaches the planet, Jackson begins to slowly recover.
SG-1, once Jackson recovers; manage to figure out how to shut off the light generating pedestal. Since they have a few hours before the withdrawal symptoms begin, Teal'c, O'Neill, and Carter explore the countryside outside of the palace with Jack and Carter both being the first to display symptoms as they get into an argument over Jack having rank over Carter. On a nearby beach, they find the remains of two humans - most likely Loran's parents. As they begin to feel the effects of withdrawal, they quickly return to the palace where they begin to feel better almost immediately upon their arrival.
Jackson, on the other hand, stayed back to translate has been feeling fine the entire time. They reason that the light itself is not causing the addiction, but rather something else. After examining the pedestal, they learn that it emits radiation without the light. O'Neill confronts Loran; he shows the team the control panel and how to disable the device. Teal'c is able to figure out how to shut down the device slowly, to wean the team off the radiation.
After a few weeks, SG-1 returns home and they tell Loran that he can come with them.

O'Neill: Barber. When you get there, give this to Daniel, will you?
O'Neill: We had a bet. I lost.
Carter: What'd you bet on?
O'Neill: Sports related. Just give it to him. He'll know what it means.
Barber: Yes, Sir.
Carter: What sport?
Carter: What sport did you bet on?
Carter: Daniel bet on curling?
O'Neill: Oh yeah, his team won the big... Bonspiel...
Carter: Okay. You don't want to tell me what the bet is, that's fine.
O'Neill: Good. Have fun.
Carter: So sir, are you sure you'd rather take the weekend off than come with me to see this place?
O'Neill: Ah, you know I get that way when I work my ass off. In fact I'd have figured you might want some time off yourself by now.
Carter: Oh I did, but Daniel says of all the pl— That was the bet? Whether or not I'd go? Don't you have anything better to do?
Loran: Hey, uh, I wanted to show you something. This was a present from my father on my birthday.
(Loran holds up and small toy gun and Teal'c draws his Zat.)
Loran: No, it's not real.
(Loran hands the toy gun to Teal'c)
Teal'c: Children of the Tau'ri also seem to enjoy colorful weapons that have no function.
Loran: It's fun.
(Teal'c pulls the trigger and the toy lights up and makes noise)
Teal'c: I see.
Hammond: But Colonel O'Neill was only on that planet for a little over an hour.
Frasier: Yes, sir, this addiction appears to be almost instantaneous.
O'Neill: Are you telling me I'm addicted to that place?
Frasier: The intensity of your mood swing into depression seems to be proportional to the time you spent on the planet. All we can do is hope that your exposure wasn't long enough for your symptoms to get as bad as they did with Daniel and the others.
O'Neill: Great. All those years of just saying no.
O'Neill: How long were we standing here?
Jackson: I'm not sure. General Hammond sent some supplies and Loran and I figured out how to translate the writing on this thing, so...
O'Neill: That long?
Jackson: Well, perception of time is one of the first things to go when you're... high. From what I've been able to translate so far with Loran's help, the Goa'uld used to use this place as some sort of opium den. The only difference is their symbiotes must have kept the host's mind chemically balanced once they left.
Teal'c: Then most likely I will be able to leave this planet.
O'Neill: Well how nice for you.
Carter: Oh I guess the reality that we may never go home is starting to sink in.
O'Neill: Oh, Hammond will keep us supplied with everything we need until we figure this out. It's a nice beach.
Carter: Be a good excuse for you, wouldn't it?
Carter: To do nothing for a while?
Carter: Forget it.
O'Neill: You mean "Forget it, sir."
Carter: Oh you think I'm keeping that up if we're stuck here forever?
O'Neill: Listen, Major.
Carter: No way!
O'Neill: That's "No way, Colonel!"
Teal'c: Within two to three weeks your brain chemistry will return to normal.
O'Neill: So, three weeks in a palace by the beach?
- It is stated in the audio commentary that Loran is about 15 years old. Kristian Ayre the actor who played him was 23 at the time.
- This episode also marks the first time Teal'c mentions his age; at 101 years old, 47 days from being 102 years old.
- Major General George S. Hammond refers to Barber as "lieutenant" in the Briefing Room, but the end credits list Barber as "sergeant". The Stargate SG-1: The DVD Collection 28 confirms he is a lieutenant.
- Before going to the planet, Colonel Jack O'Neill says that they will go through the gate in MOPP 2 (Mission Oriented Protective Posture Level 2). When they go through the gate, they are in MOPP 3.
- When O'Neill goes to Dr. Daniel Jackson's apartment, the outside shot shows that the building is three levels high, and has no balconies. However, Jackson's apartment has a balcony.
