How much is this magazine canon?

OK I know that a lot of informations of this magazine are put into the articles of this wikia (especially specs) but after reading through a lot of these magazines I found several points that IMO are speculation (f.e. the gate adresses which are shown several times to contradict infos on screen). Although I think that the artworks of these magazines are great and useful I question how much infos of the magazines should be used in this wikia. Sorry if this question was asked earlier but I would like to hear your opinions on this topic. Diabound00 15:48, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

I was about to make a comment just like this on the Talk:Hive Ship page. I'm glad I decided to check here first, and I have to agree. I've gotta say, I don't know why any information from these DVD magazines is used. I've come across a number of pages that include gate addresses cited in the magazine that are blatantly wrong (they include Abydos and Earth's points of origin). I also agree with Sman789's comment on the Asuran pistol that 15 meters is ridiculously short range, and the comments on the Hive Ship page that the hives clearly contain more than 50 darts. Not to mention Heru-ur, which seems to be the only instance ever in the Goa'uld language that a dash is used instead of an apostrophe. And Bilskirnir, despite the fact that the spelling matches Norse mythology, it is clearly pronounced "Biliskner" in the series (which is acceptable). Which also reminds me, (off topic) Biliskner still exists as a page. —Ka'lel 01:18, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
First of all, we have no evidence that the default load for the Hive Ship is more than 50 darts. We already know that Hive Ships can carry 4 cruisers, and so if those cruisers carried their own darts or were missing and instead replaced with darts then of course there would be more. However, the default load could very well be 50 darts. Secondly, the show itself shows many gate addresses using the Abydos or Earth points of origin (check the SGC screens when they're going through gate addresses) and so that's hardly a problem with the magazine, and more with the show. Heru-ur is used as the official spelling in the proper subtitles, in other source material, as well as (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here) the end credits of the shows he's in. The Asuran pistol is given an optimum range of 15 meters, it never states that it can fire 15 meters and no more...though, even if it did, we've never seen it fire more than that in the show so we'd have went with it. In regards to the Bilisknir/Bilskirnir stuff, the magazine clearly states that Thor's ship is the Bilisknir which is a Bilskirnir-class ship. This contradicts nothing in the show. —Jaymach Ral'Tir (talk) 02:01, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
Gotcha, but...
In regards to the gate addresses, shouldn't the ones actually seen dialed in the show be considered canon regardless of whether or not they're incorrect? And if the magazine then contradicts an address already seen and dialed in the show (given the magazines come out after the airings of the episodes), shouldn't that information be considered non-canon?
And in regards to subtitles, they are anything but reliable and should really never be referenced for the spelling of anything if a better source can be used. I, myself, have seen many discrepencies, for example: "Asguard", "Tacs", "Amonet", "Keb", "Kronos", and more that I can't think of off the top of my head anymore.
Anyways, I went to the DVD collection site linked on this page, and aside from looking sketchy itself, there's no mention anywhere that it's an official source for information. I also can't find any indication that anyone who works on this magazine that has anything to do with the show(s). Because I've never actually seen an issue of the magazine myself, I was wondering if someone could give me some insight as to where the writers and illustrators of the magazine get their sources for information. Cheers. —Ka'lel 02:41, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Well how do you explain for the magazine saying Prometheus has Lazer Beams (or Lazer Batteries) here?—Anubis 10545 03:13, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

The magazine merely reprints the official weapons given to them by the writers of the show. The same Laser Battery is seen in Stargate SG-1: The Ultimate Visual Guide which was written by Kate Ritter and approved by Richard Dean Anderson himself as you can see here. And yes, the website for the magazines is...well...it's crap plain and simple...but the illustrators of the magazine get their sources from...themselves, mostly. Many of the illustrators for the magazine also worked to illustrate things in the show itself, and so they just re-used their models for the magazines. In regards to the writers, although some of them were brought on board by GE Fabbri, many of them were simply taken from the crew who create The Official Magazine or other licensed material. Not to mention the fact that every issue has to go for approval with MGM themselves before it can be published. —Jaymach Ral'Tir (talk) 10:24, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, Jaymach, but after doing much research into the DVD Collection magazines (even going as far as e-mailing GE Fabbri for a confirmation of their sources - no response yet), I'm left with only your word as evidence that the writers and illustrators are connected to the show. The only artist I was able to connect - in any way - to the show was James Robbins who is credited as James Robbins (II) on imdb, and the only writer Sally Reeve I could find, writes fan-fic. (There's also a possibility these could be different people with coincidentally, the same names). Given what I feel to be glaring errors, I just can't accept the magazines as canon. Yes, maybe there are cruisers in the hive-ships with their own darts to deploy, but given the size of a cruiser, there's probably very few to add to the complement. And maybe, in the space where a cruiser would be, is a few darts, but this is all conjecture. Just watching the show, common sense tells you there's more than 50 darts to a hive ship. If you want a specific reference, The Hive has a great shot of just one of the dart bays, and later, darts are deployed in formations of 5, making them easy to count. I also still have an issue with their gate addresses. Anyways, this is all just my opinion and ultimately doesn't affect the site, but I felt it needed to be said for anyone who happens past this talk page. I understand that information will continue to be added to the site from these magazines, and said information will still be considered officially canon, but I'd also like to point out I couldn't find one instance of the word "official" attached to this magazine. So long as all information added to the wiki from these magazines reference the magazines as a source (as has been done up to this point, I think), I'll be happy. And I'll be taking it all with a massive grain of salt. Cheers.—Ka'lel 02:47, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Selling SG-1 collection

Hey guys, I've got issues 1 all the way to 62. Missing 63, but also have issues 64 and 64 which are of Atlantis. I'm just wondering if anyone is interested in buying the whole set? Im going to put it up on ebay soon...

All but the first 2 dvds are still sealed. The magazines are loose, but are still in very good condition. They've been in a box under my bed for a while, and I dont really plan on reading them anymore. —ElChristo (talk) (Contribs) 16:29, March 3, 2010 (UTC)
