Template:ATL-1 "Suspicion" is the fifth episode in season one of Stargate Atlantis.

Summary

The Atlantis team returns to the city after a Wraith attack. Weir realises that this is the fifth offworld mission of their last nine to have been interrupted by Wraith, and the Atlantis crew begins to suspect the Athosians of having a spy amongst them. The hardline security chief Sgt. Bates wants to restrict their movement within the city, and keep all the non-base personnel out of certain areas including "Stargate Operations, the labs, power generation and the Jumper Bay"; Sheppard trusts Teyla and the other Athosians, but unwillingly follows Weir's orders. Together, Weir and Bates interview the Athosians in the city, but it goes badly, as the Athosians feel deeply insulted at the idea that they could be spying for the Wraith.

Sheppard and Ford take a puddle jumper out to explore the planet and discover a continent of some fifteen million square miles in extent, located less than half-an-hour's journey from the city; Halling and the other Athosians decide to move there to prove their innocence and regain their freedom of movement, with only Teyla Emmagan remaining in the city. Gate travel is resumed, but the next mission sees yet another Wraith attack, and Teyla and Ford are briefly stranded under attack. Some members of the Atlantis team, especially Bates, start to suspect Teyla of being the spy; he brings her belongings to McKay to be analysed for communications devices and other high-technology items. After McKay finds a Wraith transmitter in Teyla's necklace, her guilt seems all but proven, until Sheppard remembers that he had found the necklace in a cave at the Athosians former home planet where Teyla had lost it years before. Sheppard's ATA gene had inadvertently activated the transmitter, sending out a constant signal to the Wraith, which McKay hypothesises was picked up by relay devices on some of the planets they visited; this explains why they were attacked only on certain planets, and also why no attacks had occurred on Atlantis itself.

With the Athosians cleared of suspicion, the team sets up a trap to capture a Wraith by luring them to the transmitter. The first Wraith captured initiates a self-destruct mechanism. Teyla spots another Wraith lurking around the rocks and rushes off to battle with him. As the Wraith is about to kill her, Sheppard stuns it with the Wraith's weapons, stopping him before he initiates his own self-destruct. They stun the Wraith, keep him in a holding cell on Atlantis, and (in a future episode) name him Steve; he threatens them, saying that the Wraith will come to rescue him and destroy the city.

Series continuity

  • Weir says in this episode that the Athosians have been living in the city for three months, indicating the passage of time since "Rising".
  • Sheppard says the discovered land mass has an area of 15,000,000 square miles. However in a later episode McKay says its "roughly the size of North America" which is about 9,450,000 square miles.
