Louise Astor 4

Za'tarc-influenced Louise Astor unwillingly about to commit suicide.

Suicide is the act in which an individual ends his or her own life, be it intentional or by accident, and is occasionally a sacrificial act although it might also be caused by the person involved being in a very depressive state.

This could be done by a variety of methods, including symbiote poison, radiation poisoning or self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Known instances of suicide[]

  • Stragoth; In 1999, the Stragoth attempted to gain a foothold situation in Stargate Command. Fortunately, they were stopped before anything else could happen. The Tau'ri shut down the Stargate to prevent everyone from leaving while in turn forced the Stragoth who remained on Earth to willingly blow themselves up to avoid being captured. (SG1: "Foothold")
  • Major Thomas Graham and Lt. Louise Astor; In 2000, Graham and Astor, both brainwashed Za'tarcs, took their own lives after failing to assassinate their intended targets. (SG1: "Divide and Conquer")
  • Lt. Dean Barber; While visiting P4X-347, he became addicted to the Light Matrix Hologram located there. After returning to Earth, he began to feel withdrawal symptoms, developing depression over time. Eventually, he became suicidal and couldn't take it anymore so he ended his life by throwing himself into the unstable vortex of an outgoing wormhole much to the shock of those in the gate room at the time including Colonel Jack O'Neill and Major Samantha Carter. (SG1: "The Light")
  • The K'Tau; A few K'Tau radicals suicide bombed a rocket prepared by SG-1 to be launched into the planet's sun in an attempt to correct a mistake and save the people of the planet. The radicals, led by the village elder, believed that the gods wished them to die and also that was not SG-1's place to interfere. (SG1: "Red Sky")
  • Lt. Kevin Elliot/Lantash; In 2001, he was gravely injured during a Goa'uld attack on a Tok'ra base in Revanna. Host to Lantash at the time, his injuries proved too severe. Elliot got his hands on symbiote poison and waited for a Jaffa patrol, who took him to the area of the Stargate; he then released the poison, killing every Jaffa to give SG-1 enough time to escape. Lantash and his host died in the process. (SG1: "Last Stand")
  • Tara'c; Led a suicide mission against Nirrti with a Naquadah bomb strapped to his chest. (SG1: "The Warrior")
  • People of P3X-289 fell under control of the Link and were leaving protective dome and dying in the toxic atmosphere. (SG1: "Revisions")
  • People of M7G-677; The inhabitants performed a ritual suicide on the eve of their 25th birthdays, with the belief that they would not get attacked by the Wraith. In fact Dr. Rodney McKay determined that the probable reason was that the Ancients initialized an Electromagnetic field generator, which only covered a small area, and that the people used the ritual to control the population. Fortunately, they were able to expand the cover area, enough so that they would no longer need to do so. (SGA: "Childhood's End")
  • Dr. Brendan Gall; In 2005, he was partially fed on by a Wraith survivor, aging rapidly as a result. When Gall realized that Dr. Rodney McKay was torn between wanting to assist Lt. (SGA: "The Defiant One")

  • Asgard; In 2007, the Asgard made a last attempt to fix their genetic degradation, resulting in further genetic deterioration that threatened their species' existence. Therefore, rather than await death and subsequently allow their technology to be plundered by other races, they chose to commit mass-suicide by creating a massive energy surge from their planet's core that would result in the destruction of their homeworld, Orilla. Due to the sudden appearance of three Ori warships, the Asgard were prompted to put the plan into effect somewhat sooner than expected, and entrusting their complete knowledge to the Tau'ri, their knowledge-base and technology was installed aboard the Odyssey as their legacy. (SG1: "Unending")
  • Senator Alan Armstrong; In 2009, Armstrong became injured evacuating Icarus Base. After arriving on Destiny, he began bleeding internally; blood thinners from his heart medication made it worse. Knowing he had little time and that everyone else would die from the lack of air, he locked himself into an Ancient shuttle which is leaking Destiny's atmosphere into space and could only be closed from the inside. He closed the door upon entering, saving everyone's life, but sacrificing his own. (SGU: "Air, Part 2")
  • Sgt. Spencer; Became dependent on sleeping pills, which eventually ran out. In withdrawal, his mental state deteriorated, resulting in increased anger and suicidal tendencies. After weeks of being stranded on Destiny, Spencer could take no more, eventually choosing to shoot himself in the head with a handgun. (SGU: "Justice")
  • The Ursini; In 2009, the Ursini on the Seed ship, feeling bad for dragging the Tau'ri into their war, launched a suicide attack on the Control Ship in order to buy them to time to repair Destiny's shields so the ship could escape to FTL. Thanks to the Ursini's sacrifice, the repairs were successfully conducted and Destiny escaped. (SGU: "Deliverance")
  • Future Dr. Nicholas Rush; After accidentally killing Colonel David Telford and seeing no other options for himself, Rush climbed into the Destiny interface chair to learn the knowledge of the Ancients despite knowing that the Destiny he was on was about to fall into a Star. Dr. Nicholas Rush helped his future counterpart activate the chair and Future Rush died when the alternate Destiny fell into the star and disintegrated. (SGU: "Twin Destinies")

Alternate timelines[]

  • Colonel Samantha Carter; In 2008, Carter commanded the Phoenix. After a series of successful missions, the ship was ambushed by three Hive ships, forcing the crew to evacuate to the nearest Stargate for their own safety.
