Just as his drones are about to retrieve the last two survivors (Sheppard & Ronan) they are beamed away by the recently arrived Daedelus. Just before they had beamed the survivors Michael attempts to escape but the Daedelus is able to disable its hyperdrive engine just before he jumps into Hyperspace. As the Daedelus has to drop its shields to beam the survivors, Michaels ship is able to cause considerable damage to it, disabling Sublight and Hyperdrive engines as well as Asgard Weapons. As only the shields are going to hold for a short time, the Daedelus launchs an F-302 strike against Michaels cruiser to which darts are launched in response. This attack disables the cruisers main weapons as well as allowing a cloaked jumper with Sheppard, Ronan and McCay aboard. This strike team is able to disable the cruisers hyperdrive and rescue Teyla (with the help of Kanaan) but their jumper is not where they left it (it is implied that Micael found it) so they escape in Wraith dart. As soon as the team is confirmed safe, a recently repaired Daedelus destroys Michaels cruiser but it is unknown if Micheal escapes cloaked in the stolen jumper.

This episode is part 2 of 2; it is preceded by "The Last Man".

"Search and Rescue" is the first episode of the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis.

Summary

Carter launches a rescue operation for several victims of a huge off-world implosion (Col. Sheppard, Ronon Dex, Rodney McKay and Maj. Lorne), but before the rescue party can rescue Sheppard and Ronon, Michael and his army who also wish to recover the survivors. Captain Alicia Vega joins the expedition.

Captain Vega, a 28-year-old new addition to Atlantis, speaks with Colonel Carter about her lack of an assignment. When the Stargate activates, the two rush down the stairs to meet Lt. Edison. Edison has rushed back from Michael's compound, where a number of Atlantis personnel are now trapped. He has come for back-up and to secure rescue for his team and the others.

Carter and Vega, joined by Dr. Keller and a contingent, gear up and head to the planet in a cloaked Jumper. They begin searching for their missing people -- including McKay and Lorne, who find themselves trapped together with no way out. But the team is being watched from overhead: Michael is on board a cruiser orbiting the planet, scanning their life signs. When he determines that the Atlantians are there and may still prove useful to his agenda, he launches Wraith darts to capture them.

The search team falls back to their Jumper to wait for reinforcements, but it's too late to use the Stargate: the Wraith have dialed into the planet, preventing their escape. Now they, like their missing friends, are trapped.

This strike team is able to disable the cruisers hyperdrive and rescue Teyla (with the help of Kanaan) but their jumper is not where they left it (it is implied that Michael found it) so they escape in Wraith dart. As soon as the team is confirmed safe, a recently repaired Daedelus destroys Michaels cruiser but it is unknown if Micheal escapes cloaked in the stolen jumper.

Carter gates to Earth for evaluation by the IOA, however on arriving Woolsey informs her that he will be replacing her as commander of the Atlantis Expedition.
