SG-9 was one of the original nine SG teams created by presidential order after Colonel Jack O'Neill's second expedition through the Stargate to Abydos in 1997. (SG1: "Children of the Gods")

SG-9 was originally led by Captain Jonas Hanson. However Hanson and Lt. Matthew Baker decide to become AWOL when they arrived to a planet where they were regarded as Gods, killing Lt. Thomas Frakes and attempting to kill Lt Laurence Conner as well to prevent SG Command to know of their desertion, but his plan was fool by SG-1 intervention, resulting in Hanson and Baker's deaths. (SG1: "The First Commandment")

Lt. Laurence Conner survived the mission and went on to lead SG-11 after being promoted to captain. (SG1: "Spirits") In 1998, SG-9 was lead by attorney Major Stan Kovacek. (SG1: "Prisoners")

In 2002, SG-9 was lead by Major Benton and was overdue with their reports while going on a mission to planet Latona. They were there to re-establish diplomatic relations with that planet's inhabitants. Other known members are Lt. Carl Grogan, Tarkman and Winters, but Grogan was the only survivor, after a Jaffa attack. (SG1: "The Sentinel")

In 2004, SG-9 was sent to the Rand Protectorate on Tegalus to negotiate with Soren to allow Stargate Command to search for Daniel Jackson. (SG1: "Icon")
