SG-7 was one of the original nine SG teams created by presidential order after Colonel Jack O'Neill's second expedition through the Stargate to Abydos. (SG1: "Children of the Gods")

Under the command of John Smith, SG-7 set up the Douglas Mclean Memorial Observatory on the planet Hanka to observe a black hole. Tragically, all of this team was later killed by Nirrti's Engineered Virus. (SG1: "Singularity")
Eventually, another version of SG-7 was formed, with this one being more focused on military efforts rather than the scientific research implications of the previous team.
