Rock paper scissors is a Tau'ri hand game, usually played with two people. It involves the participants decided to make one of three hand shapes, that being rock, paper and scissors, against each other. Rock beats scissors. Paper beats rock, and scissors beats paper. Rock is formed by a closed fist. Paper is represented by a flat open hand, and scissors is depicted with the middle and index finger extended out into a V shape, while the rest of the fingers are tucked into the palm.

In order to decide who, between Dr. Rodney McKay, Peter Grodin or Lt. Lou Miller, would go out into space to reroute power of the damage circuits of the Lagrangian Point satellite, a task that wouldn't be safe or easy given the lack of anything to hold on to, Lou suggested they play rock paper scissors. The three played the game, however, all three of them played each different symbol. Grodin with paper, Miller with rock, and McKay with scissors, which resulted in none of them being the loser.
