Renal failure is a medical condition when kidney function is severely impaired, as they no longer insufficiently filter toxins and waste from the blood. Both kidneys tend to be attacked simultaneously by the disease. There are a different series of health problems that can cause some form of kidney failure. It is described as a decrease in glomerular filtration rate. Renal failure can be treated with dialysis Also, a transplant from a matched individual can replace the old ones.

In 2005, renal failure was one of the health conditions that was had by a Dr. Elizabeth Weir, who was from an alternate timeline where Atlantis' shield collapsed and the expedition perished. (SGA: "Before I Sleep")
Dale Volker used to take blood pressure pills due to hypertension, but he ran out shortly after arriving on Destiny. Later, in 2010, he suffered to renal failure but was cured when Ronald Greer sacrificed one of his kidneys. (SGU: "Hope")
Alternate timeline[]
- In an alternate timeline, after being stranded on Novus, Dr. Dale Volker suffered from renal failure. With the limited resources available to them, the Destiny crew were unable to successfully treat the condition and unlike his main timeline self, Volker died of it. (SGU: "Epilogue")
