This episode is a clip show: it is largely composed of clips of previous episodes.

"Out of Mind" is the twenty-second episode of the second season of Stargate SG-1.

Synopsis[]

Colonel Jack O'Neill is awakened from stasis in Stargate Command but finds out he is in the year 2077 and that the rest of his team, and everyone he knew, died. However, he has suspicions that the "SGC personnel" is hiding something from him, which he later finds out is a planned Goa'uld invasion of the SGC and Earth.

Plot[]

Colonel Jack O'Neill awakens from cryogenic stasis pod and is informed that his team and everyone he knew, is dead. He is told that they are in Stargate Command and 79 years have passed. Now there are 28 SG teams and another 10 occupy offworld colonies. Earth is still fighting the Goa'uld and is losing. To find out what race could have put him in cryogenic suspension, they connect him to an interface to remember key events from his past using a Tok'ra Memory recall device; these memories are displayed to them, (and represented to as snippets of previous episodes). It wasn't the Nox nor the Asgard. Suddenly, O'Neill slips into a coma. Meanwhile, in another room, the SGC is bringing up another stasis pod... which Captain Samantha Carter and Dr. Daniel Jackson awaken individually from. They are each informed that they are the sole survivor of SG-1.

Meanwhile, Teal'c awakens in the real SGC and is informed that he was left for dead by the Stargate and SG-3 and SG-7 and has been unconscious for three weeks. Teal'c declares his intentions of finding his friends, which Major General George S. Hammond finds pointless, since they'd been searching all over that planet and found no trace of SG-1. Teal'c then leaves the SGC and goes to Chulak.

Carter taps into her memories of when they destroyed Apophis' two Ha'taks. Jackson recounts his memories of the System Lords they faced: Apophis, Heru'ur and Hathor.

O'Neill wakes up to hear his "rescuers", talking in Goa'uld. He knocks out the man looking after him and takes his clothes. O'Neill discovers he is actually in a mock-up of the SGC inside a Goa'uld compound. He hides from Serpent Guards and Horus Guards. He finds similar mock-ups and rescues the other members of his team. They want to know who would make a mock-up of the SGC and who would know so much of its design.

Suddenly, Hathor appears and they are surrounded by Jaffa and minor Goa'uld. Hathor wants the information from SG-1 of how to contact the Asgard and the iris codes. When they would not speak, she announces her intent to implant one of them with a Goa'uld symbiote.

Notable quotes[]

Trofsky: Welcome back to the land of the living, Colonel. I'm Major General Trofsky. This is Doctor Raully.
Raully: Maybe we can try to answer some of the questions that are probably weighing heavily on your mind.
Trofsky: First of all, I regret to inform you that everyone on your team—Dr. Daniel Jackson, Captain Samantha Carter and a Jaffa named Teal'c are all deceased.
Raully: As a matter of fact, I'd imagine everyone you ever knew is probably gone now.
Trofsky: You see, Colonel, the year is now 2077.

Fraiser: It's okay, it's okay. You're in the SGC, Teal'c.
Hammond: Good to have you back, Teal'c.
Teal'c: General Hammond. Where is the rest of SG-1?
Hammond: Good question. We were hoping you could tell us.

Teal'c: General Hammond, I will not remain idle while my friend may be in danger on this planet.
Fraiser: Teal'c, you've been unconscious for three weeks.
Teal'c: That is not possible. My symbiote would have awakened me long before the period of three weeks.
Fraiser: You were barely alive, Teal'c. You had substantial internal injuries.
Hammond: Dr. Fraiser spent most of the three weeks at your side. I'm convinced it was her refusal to give up that kept you alive.
Teal'c: I am in your debt, Dr. Fraiser.

Jackson: I don't understand. They said—
Carter: They're Goa'uld, Daniel.
Jackson: What year is it?
Carter: 1999, more than likely.
Jackson: So this is all a hoax?
O'Neill: Big hoax. I'd say so.
Jackson: I have more questions, but that can wait.

Jackson: I’ve never seen this place so deserted.
Carter: Guess they figure they don't need to keep up the act if we’re unconscious.
(O'Neill experimentally kicks the Stargate.)
O'Neill: It's fake.
Jackson: I don't understand. Who would have spent enough time in the base to be able to reproduce it in this kind of detail? (to the Camera) You don't think Apophis...
Hathor: Silence!
O'Neill: Oh, I was so hoping never to see you again.
Hathor: (in her nice voice) We have indeed missed you, our beloved.
Carter: Daniel, don't let her breathe on you.
Hathor: You think that we would go to these lengths if you were not already immune to that organism? Do you like our guards? We managed to lure them from the remote outposts of our enemies. We are quietly building our forces before the System Lords even know that we are alive. But doing so is difficult when we have to operate with limited knowledge of the state of the empire.
O'Neill: Let me take a guess, it's just a wild guess, but that's where we come in, right?
Carter: We know more than you do.
Hathor: Perhaps. We are prepared to offer you a life of luxury as servants in our royal court, for sharing information. Deny us… and you will not enjoy the alternative.
O'Neill: Ya know, you should really do something about the breath.
Hathor: How do we contact the Asgard so that we might align with their forces?
O'Neill: Try Roswell. Little place in New Mexico.

Notes[]

  • This episode is the second time that a clip show has been used, the first being the Season 1 episode "Politics".
  • The Region 2 DVD boxset lists this episode as "Out of Hand"
  • Teal'c mentions that Horus Guards and Serpent Guards working together is a very unusual combination. The Horus Guards serve the family of Ra—including Hathor, his wife, and Heru'ur, his son ("Thor's Chariot"). Serpent Guards serve Apophis, Ra's worst enemy. In mythology, Ra is the sun god, while Apophis is the god of the underworld, or darkness.
  • O'Neill criticizes the cheap quality of the fake SGC, calling it a “damn cost-cutter”. It is likely this line was inserted as a joke by the writers, acknowledging their own “cost-cutting” use of a clip show.

Goofs[]

  • At the very beginning, people touch O'Neill's container without any hand protection. Their hands would have been instantly frozen if the container was in some kind of cryogenic fluid.
  • O'Neill knocks out Carter's guard who is O'Neill's size and tells Carter to wear the guards clothes. But she is next seen wearing clothes that are form fitting for her much smaller body.

Other languages[]

  • French: Après un Long Sommeil (After a Long Sleep)
  • German: Die Höhle des Löwen, Teil 1 (Lion's Den, Part 1)
  • Italian: In Trappola (Trapped)
  • Spanish: Desde el fondo de la mente (From the Bottom of the Mind)
  • Czech: Otázka paměti (Matter of Memory)
  • Hungarian: Ébredések (Awakenings)
