Nekai was a man who was also the leader of the V'rdai Nehar'lem.
Biography[]
After his planet was destroyed by the Wraith, Nekai was chosen to be a Runner, a tracker device planted in his back. Fortunately, he had previously memorized a list of addresses for the Stargate and knew the secret of how to operate it, allowing him to dial a series of safe addresses. At some point in his travels, he encountered another Runner and learnt that, so long as two or more trackers were in close proximity, they disrupted each other's signals so that the Wraith couldn't track them.
With this knowledge, Nekai began to track down other Runners and assemble them into a team of hunters under his command, naming them the V'rdai Nehar'lem, a term from his native language meaning "hunter becomes the hunted". He claimed that it was impossible to remove the trackers as they were fitted with explosives, having allegedly witnessed another Runner kill himself while trying to remove his device, ensuring that the team's only chance for survival was to stay together. During this time, one of his recruits was Ronon Dex, a survivor of the planet Sateda, who claimed Nekai's favourite weapon for himself. Ronon was part of the V'rdai for two years, but things changed when Nekai killed a group of natives on a planet the team were visiting. Nekai justified this action as the V'rdai couldn't trust that others they met wouldn't betray them to the Wraith at some future date, but Ronon objected to the idea that they should treat everyone they met as a potential threat, preferring to be cautious but give them a chance to prove themselves. When the rest of the V'rdai sided with Nekai, Ronon stunned them with a flash-bang grenade and fled back to the Stargate.
2008[]
Some years later, Nekai ran into Ronon again when AR-1 responded to a distress call that turned out to be a trap set by the V'rdai to lure in other ships. The V'rdai were able to capture Colonel Sheppard and Teyla Emmagan, but Ronon escaped with Doctor McKay and explain who they were up against. Using Ronon's knowledge of the V'rdai methods, he and McKay were able to rescue Sheppard and Teyla and capture their opponents.
Ronon went to meet with Nekai alone, confirming that Nekai's tale of the trackers being explosive was a lie he had told to ensure control (he clarified that the Runner he saw die had basically killed himself trying to take the tracker out on his own). Ronon offered to invite Nekai and the rest of the V'rdai join him on Atlantis so long as they stopped attacking non-combatants, but Nekai rejected that offer, unable to acknowledge that there were innocents in the galaxy and judging everyone on the chance that they might betray a Runner to the Wraith. Ronon was able to trap Nekai using a snare trick he had used before and left his former teacher to be killed.
