Mike Branton was born in Chicago, Illinois and studied Computer Science at the University of Illinois in Chicago, taking a position at a major computing organization and becoming a member of a development team of software engineers. He then earned a PhD in physics at the University of Washington, publishing a paper that got the attention of the government and catapulting him into a position at Stargate Command.
A few years later he joined the Atlantis expedition, coming on the second wave of personnel aboard the Daedalus, where he is responsible for sending data bursts back to Stargate Command and maintaining the computer systems on the base and interfacing Tau'ri technology with Ancient technology. During the fateful day off, before the death of Dr. Carson Beckett, he noticed Dr. Elizabeth Weir was still working. He invited her for a lunch date. She was at first hesitant, as Weir made it her personal rule never to become involved romantically with a fellow expedition member. He insisted that it was just a co-worker discussion lunch date. Weir later agreed. After lunch, he confessed that he was fond of her, and even kissed her, which he admitted was out of line. It is unknown what happened to him after that fateful day. - One of Mike's favorite films is "Annie Hall", and he suggests that Elizabeth's preference for "When Harry Met Sally" may be a deal-breaker.
