The M249 Squad Automatic Weapon is a belt-fed light machine gun used by the SGC and the Atlantis expedition. Major Charles Kawalsky carried one on the first excursion to Chulak and put it to good use against Apophis' troops pursuing SG-1 back to the Stargate. (SG1: " Children of the Gods, Part 2")

Major John Sheppard also used one to take down a Wraith Dart. (SGA: "Rising")

Trivia

  • The weapons used during production were in fact Korean made Daewoo K3s modified with Para-style stocks and barrels, rather than actual FN M249s.
  • The M249 is an Americanized version of the Belgian FN Minimi, the primary difference originally being the buttstock, though various other changes have been introduced over the weapon's time in service.
  • The M249 weighs 7.5 kg (17 lb) empty and 10 kg (22 lb) loaded, and as most weapons of that size and power has considerable recoil. Therefore, it is hardly ever fired from the shoulder in actual practice; light machine guns are normally fired from a bipod or other support in a prone or crouching (when support for the weapon at a suitable height can be found) position, or are mounted on light vehicles and the like.
