The device is capable of showing images, such as the upper body of those who are taking. Though capable of being quite large, this appears to be mostly for effect, as the spheres have been shown to be small enough to fit in the palm of the hand. The long range visual communication device is a communications system used by the Goa'uld. Shaped like a gray sphere of varying size, it allows for a one-way or two-way audio and visual communication link across interstellar distances.

Overview

The device comes in different sizes, ranging from handheld versions to larger ones that can be several feet in diameter. They seem to function the same regardless of size, though one of the larger versions is shown to have an anti-gravity ability which allows it to float in the center of an inactive Stargate. (SG1: "Within the Serpent's Grasp")

The Tok'ra do not use the devices, as the system is not secure enough to ensure the secrecy of Tok'ra bases. Colonel Harold Maybourne had access to at least two, which after much research were eventually adapted to serve as a communication link with his secret offworld team. In addition to audio and visual information, Maybourne was able to use the device to transfer mission data. (SG1: "The Tok'ra, Part 1", "The Tok'ra, Part 2", "Shades of Grey")

The Goa'uld Tanith used a handheld variant of these devices after escaping the Tok'ra on Vorash to contact Apophis and inform him about the location of the Tok'ra base. (SG1: "Exodus")
