Langara, or P2S-4C3, is a world in the Milky Way galaxy.
Overview[]
Langara's sun is Telnar, a G3 main sequence star. The planet's orbit takes 380 days and the days last 23 hours in length.
Langara is similar to Earth in many aspects, most notably in the variety of climates and terrains that dot its surface. The land mass consists of four continents: Sistoni, Secus, Leinad and Bedal, all of which can be found on approximately the same half of the planet. Water covers over 78% of the surface. Both Sistoni and Leinad are adjacent to each other, bound near the equatorial band. The axial tilt of Langara is slightly less than that of Earth, resulting in less extreme variations of temperature and climate. Sistoni, located to the south, is marked by a series of low mountain ranges, dense forests and multiple great lakes. Leinad to the north has a warmer temperate climate, full of jungles and swampy lowlands which thin as one gets closer to the equator before finally giving way to a large set of mountain ranges. These mountains are rich in mineral deposits, as well as trace amounts of Naquadria. The continent of Bedal lies across the ocean of Dethas and is the largest land mass of all Langara. The majority of Bedal runs parallel to the equatorial belt. The winters are quite extreme in the lower regions. The upper regions of Bedal flow into vast plains and grasslands stretching for hundreds of miles on all directions. Separated by the ocean of Lentac is the smaller continent of Secus, which is entirely self-contained. The temperatures on the continent tend to be quite warm. The bulk of the land is covered in low hills, scrub and grasslands, becoming lush as one gets closer to the coast. Most major cities on Secus lie near the coast. For all intents Secus is entirely secluded, like a giant island. A number of small island chains to the north of Bedal and Secus have been settled by small colonies from nearby governments, and every now and then one changes hands. The size of Bedal makes reaching Sistoni from Secus a difficult task. The oceanic expanse that covers th other half of the world between Sistoni and Secus is so daunting, no one has attempted to cross it - there are no known islands or intervening spots of land. After the explosion of Kelowna's Naquadria bomb, earthquakes became more common and the atmosphere started presenting increasingly more elevated levels of radiation. (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
History[]
Background information[]
Some time ago, it was occupied by a Goa'uld known as Thanos. Thanos brought humans to the planet some three thousand years ago. Thanos attempted to create a new form of Naquadah called Naquadria, but his experiments nearly destroyed the planet.
It's unknown whether Thanos survived the incident, but it is not likely since the world was afterwards abandoned by the Goa'uld. Over the millennia, the inhabitants of the planet became more technologically advanced and, by the early twenty-first century, it was ruled by three superpowers, Kelowna, Tirania and the Andari Federation.
2002[]
These three nations were, and arguably still are, highly distrustful of each other. In fact, the Kelownans began creating a bomb using the planet's Naquadria, which was found mostly in their territory. Around the Earth year of 1986, the Kelownans discovered their planet's Stargate although they did not know what the device was until SG-1 visited the planet in 2002.
Kelowna helps develop and share technology with Stargate Command, the planet's most famous inhabitant being Jonas Quinn. Unfortunately, due to the failure of the Naquadria bomb and the framing of Dr. Daniel Jackson for its loss, Earth withdrew all communications. However, after realizing the devastating power of Naquadria, Jonas defected to Earth where after spending a few months there, eventually took Daniel's place as a member of the SGC's flagship team, SG-1. (SG1: "Meridian", "Redemption, Part 2")
A year later, the Tirania and Andari were close to joining forces, forcing Kelowna to ask Earth for help, but Stargate Command refused to give any 21st century technology that could be misused. With war breaking out and little choice, Kelowna used the Naquadria bomb, which they later regretted, for its power devastated all three nations, who went to the negotiating table. (SG1: "Shadow Play")
2003[]
After the ascended entity Anubis attempted to conquer Langara for his own and take the Naquadria, Kelowna, Tirania, and the Andari Federation chose to form a Joint Ruling Council, which would cooperate with each other. Langara was nearly devastated when a Naquadria vein came close to exploding, but Jonas and SG-1 were able to avert it. (SG1: "Homecoming", "Fallout")
2006[]
During the Ori invasion of the Milky Way, Langara was conquered shortly after the devastation of Dakara. They have since regained their independence, presumably after the Ark of Truth was used to show the Ori's worshipers their gods' true nature and thereby leaving their service. (SG1: "Counterstrike", "The Ark of Truth")
2010[]
By 2010, the Langarans had built a power station that tapped directly into the Naquadria-rich core of their planet and moved the Stargate into this facility. Both the Tau'ri and the Lucian Alliance had been petitioning the Langaran government for permission to use this facility to power the Stargate to dial a 9-chevron address in order to send reinforcements to Destiny. The Langarans refused as the process previously caused enough instability in the core of both planets where it was attempted, resulting in their destruction, despite reassurances by Dr. Meredith Rodney McKay that the understanding has improved and with a new method such a catastrophe is statistically impossible. The Langarans were, however, not convinced. After a subsequent failed Tau'ri plan to dial the gate by force, the Stargate was moved to another facility. As a result of this diplomatic disaster, the Tau'ri pledged their protection of Langara from any future attacks from the Lucian Alliance. (SGU: "Seizure")
