Kirkland is a Colonel in the United States Air Force in command of the starship Prometheus, presumably serving as a temporary replacement for Colonel William Ronson.

Kirkland later stepped down when Major General George S. Hammond arrived to lead the ship into the Battle of Antarctica with the Prometheus protecting SG-1 from Anubis' interstellar invasion fleet. (SG1: "Lost City, Part 2")
