John Smith was a member of the United States Air Force and commander of SG-7.

He was assigned to oversee the Douglas Mclean Memorial Observatory on the planet Hanka that was built to observe a Black hole. He was killed when Nirrti released an Engineered Virus on the population. (SG1: "Singularity")
