He was once working with a colleague, Dr. Harriet Hewston when they both activated an Ancient device. The second they realized it was emitting radiation, they deactivated it and reported to Dr. Carson Beckett, where he found nothing life-threatening on them. However, he didn't realize that a tumor was being developed behind his lung. The next morning, he was playing golf with Lt. Colonel John Sheppard and Ronon Dex, when he complained of having a headache. On his way to the infirmary he was injured when Hewston exploded. When they realized an explosive tumor was being developed, Beckett took it out, saving Watson's life, at the cost of his own. (SGA: "Sunday")
