'''Bregman''': Why is that camera off? You don't know what you're doing here...maybe I know what I'm doing here. These people are risking their lives for us! I want to see what they're going through even if they don't want us to and I want other people to see it. What do you think they're doing out there...protecting and defending secrecy?! That's a world of Mao and Stalin and secret police, secret trials...secret...secret deaths. You force the press into the cold and all you will get is lies and innuendo! And nothing, nothing is worse for a free society than a press that is in service to the...to the military and the politicians! Nothing. You turn that camera off when I tell you to turn it off. You think I give a damn what you think about me? You serve the people...so do I!

This episode is part 2 of 2; it is preceded by "Heroes, Part 1".

Heroes, Part 2 is the eighteenth episode of the seventh season, as well as the 150th episode of Stargate SG-1.

Synopsis

During a firefight between SG teams and Jaffa patrols on P3X-666, one major team member is killed in action, but the filming crew has no idea who.

Previously on Stargate SG-1

Emmett Bregman and a film crew arrive at Stargate Command to create a documentary about the Stargate Program. Colonel Jack O'Neill refuses to take part in the documentary. SG-13 discovers Ancient ruins on the planet P3X-666 but encounter a Goa'uld Reconnaissance probe that they destroy but not before it can send out a signal. SG-13 is attacked by Jaffa and Senior Airman Simon Wells is shot in the back with a Staff weapon. SG-1 along with several SG teams as well as Dr. Janet Fraiser travel to the planet.

Plot

SG-1, SG-5 and SG-7 enter the combat on P3X-666 and provide cover for Dr. Janet Fraiser and the wounded Senior Airman Simon Wells as the SG teams exchange gunfire with Jaffa troops.

Jack is hit by a staff weapon blast.

Shockingly, while providing cover for the wounded soldier, Colonel Jack O'Neill takes a Jaffa staff weapon blast to the torso and falls to the ground amid continued violence. Major Samantha Carter breaks cover and rushes to Jack's aid while the gunfight rages on.

The embattled SG teams return to Earth and while the camera crews are forced out of the Embarkation room due to the 'No current activity' prohibition, an unidentified individual stretched lifeless on a gurney is visible to concern the viewer and the reporter, as well as Carter seen walking by in tears. Soon afterwards, the reports that there was a KIA during the mission begins to filter through the SGC and piques the interest of the reporter.

In addition, Agent Richard Woolsey conducts an investigation into Stargate Command, with many of Major General George S. Hammond's, Dr. Daniel Jackson's, and Carter's operational decisions questioned. During this, the reporter continues to try to determine exactly what happened, who was on that stretcher, and whether rumors of O'Neill's death are accurate. Eventually, Hammond orders him off the base.

However, after being reprimanded by Woolsey, Hammond comes to support the need for some form of documentation besides the official documents, and allows the reporter to view the tape that Jackson had made of the mission. Through the tape, it's shown that Fraiser tended to the wounded Wells and, almost immediately after stabilizing him for travel, taking a staff blast to the torso which kills Fraiser instantly. Jack survived his own impact, and the wounded soldier was saved due to Janet's actions.

Towards the end of the episode a memorial service for Janet is held, with Sam reading the names of those who, instead of having given their lives for their country, were still alive and serving due to Janet's excellent care. The first name on the list is Sam's own, followed by Daniel, Teal'c, Jack and many others. A touching moment, it illustrates just how large an impact Dr. Fraiser had on the SGC and how gravely her absence from it will be felt.

It is revealed that Wells, who was saved by Janet, had a newly born baby daughter. She was named after Janet. The show ends with Jack finally sitting down for an interview with Emmett Bregman.

Notable Quotes

Bregman: Why is that camera off? You don't know what you're doing here...maybe I know what I'm doing here. These people are risking their lives for us! I want to see what they're going through even if they don't want us to and I want other people to see it. What do you think they're doing out there...protecting and defending secrecy?! You think I give a damn what you think about me? You serve the people...so do I!

Hammond: I've chosen to prepare a written testimony.
Woolsey: It's your mission report.
Hammond: I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.

Carter: (Enters Col. O'Neill's private medical quarters) Sir, heard you were up and around.
O'Neill: Yeah... argh... still a little tender but they said I could go home.
Carter: We're lucky that staff blast hit you where it did. That new vest inserts works well.
O'Neill: Didn't help Fraiser much...
Carter: ... No.
O'Neill: (after a moments silence) How's Cassie?
Carter: She's a strong kid, she survives, you know...
O'Neill: Yeah. You speaking at the memorial?
Carter: (nods) Sir... I... I just wanted to say... When you were lying there, I... (fights back tears) I'm really glad you're okay.
O'Neill: (Walks over to her) C'mere. (He pulls her into a hug)

(Carter, speaking at Janet Fraiser's memorial)
Carter: Janet Fraiser was an extraordinary person. She was kind and funny and talented. Above all, she was courageous. Try as I might, I could not find the words to honor her, to do justice to her life. Thankfully, I got some help. While words alone may not be enough, there are some names that might do. We often talk about those that give their lives in the service of their country, and while Janet Fraiser did just that, that's not what her life was about. The following are the names of the men and women who did not die in service, but who are in fact alive today, because of Janet. Major Samantha Carter. Doctor Daniel Jackson. Colonel Jack O'Neill. Teal'c. Sergeant Connie Smith. Major Ian Hules. Senior Airman Simon Wells... (fades)

Goofs

  • If you watch closely while Dr. Janet Fraiser is talking to Colonel Jack O'Neill, the flashlight on his FN P90 Personal Defense Weapon appears to sink into the weapon. This is likely due to the recoil of the weapon, and the flashlight not being properly affixed to the P90's rail.
  • While Colonel David Dixon and O'Neill are taking cover behind a boulder, Dixon forces his body backwards and moves the set piece.
  • In his scenes with Fraiser and Dr. Daniel Jackson, Wells can be seen wearing an SG-18 patch even though he belongs to SG-13.
  • When Hammond informs Daniel that his superiors have ordered the tape be turned over, the photos on the computer supposedly of the runis are actually of the ancient device from "Window of Opportunity".
