Fort Detrick is a United States Army fort located in Maryland.[1] It is home to the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), one of the foremost research institutes on Earth for high-risk biological materials.[2]
Medical specialists from USAMRIID and similar facilities are at the forefront of Stargate Command's efforts against outbreaks both at the base and on other planets.[2] (RPG: "Fantastic Frontiers: Stargate Season One")
History[]
During Douglas Russo's stint at Fort Detrick's USAMRIID labs, he was put into the front lines of the 1989 Ebola crisis in Reston, Virginia.[3]
Later on, Colonel Russo directed the actions of multiple teams from Fort Detrick and oversaw both the field research and the work of identifying and cataloguing the pathogens from the field.[3]
Samples of the Touch disease from the Land of Light were sent to USAMRIID for continued study. Though precautions were taken to hide the true source of the pathogen, the team that worked on studying the genetic code at Fort Detrick discovered enough to realize the virus was neither terrestrial nor naturally occurring. When they reported these findings, they were initially ordered to abandon that line of inquiry into its origin and focus on what could be learned. Due to the potential of the Touch virus being used as a weapon, this team would end up transferred to Stargate Command so it could be further studied of its transmission vectors and the complete pathology documented.[1] (RPG: "Fantastic Frontiers: Stargate Season One")
