- "Uh, sent up a couple of flares, hoped he'd see 'em, get his bearings."
- ―Major Evan Lorne[src]
A Flare is a light source and signaling device used by the Tau'ri. Flares can be handheld or deployed with flare guns, which are handgun-like devices that are able to launch a flare in any direction. (RPG: "Roleplaying Game", RPG: "Core Rulebook")
History[]
Flares are used by some Tau'ri militaries to allow infantry to guide aircraft strikes. Flares also found a secondary purpose in scouting unknown worlds and communicating over distance when tactical radio signals are unreliable. (RPG: "Core Rulebook")
In 1996, during the Abydos Mission, flares were used by Colonel Jack O'Neill and his team when they were in the Temple of Ra. (Stargate)
In 2003, when Lt. Ritter went missing on P3X-403, a planet with peculiar electromagnetic properties that limit the range of radios, a couple of flares were sent up with the hope that he'd see them and get his bearings. (SG1: "Enemy Mine")
In 2004, Major John Sheppard lit a flare that gave off orange smoke which he used as a diversion against the Wraith survivor. (SGA: "The Defiant One")
In 2005, Lt. Colonel Sheppard lit a flare that illuminated an Iratus bug cave. (SGA: "Conversion")
