A fire starter is used by, and possibly built by, the Athosians. It is a device that shoots a yellow energy beam to start a fire for heat, light or cooking. The fire starter is evidence that the Athosians were once a technologically advanced race. Teyla Emmagan carried one. This is a small hand held device that looks like a cigarette lighter.
