"Fire and Water" is the thirteenth episode of the first season of Stargate SG-1.

Synopsis[]

SG-1 returns to Earth, convinced that Dr. Daniel Jackson is dead. While they mourn their loss, they begin to have the feeling that their memories are faked to make it look like he died, and that he is still alive. Their theories turn out to be correct, when Jackson is actually imprisoned by an Ohne named Nem to extract information regarding the whereabouts of his mate, Omoroca.

Plot[]

Fire and Water

Jack, Sam and Teal'c arriving back on Earth

Colonel Jack O'Neill, Captain Samantha Carter and Teal'c of Chulak return prematurely from their mission to Oannes, completely drenched and agitated, reporting that Dr. Daniel Jackson is dead. They are all examined and questioned and are completely in shock. They believe that Jackson was burned to death and that they survived by submerging themselves in a nearby ocean.

Memorial service

Daniel's memorial service

Jackson is given a full military funeral ceremony, and a wreath is sent through the Stargate. When the thought of going back to the planet to retrieve Daniel's remains is mentioned, the team reacts with horrified protests. They are afterwards given a week free to relax.

Skirmish on Oannes

Nem attacks SG-1.

Although Stargate Command believes Jackson to be dead, he is sitting down very much alive, shouting for the others. He is confronted by an alien who wants Jackson to translate various Cuneiform writings, and when he reads the name "Omoroca", the alien reacts angrily. Eventually, the alien asks what has happened to Omoroca, who was his mate. Jackson doesn't understand what has happened to her, but the alien accuses him of lying. The alien believes Earth is still enslaved by the Goa'uld, and thinks Jackson is possessed by the Goa'uld. At this, Jackson explodes, asking why he would serve the race which took his wife from him.

On Earth, all members of SG-1 can't stop thinking about Jackson's apparent death and especially O'Neill reacts very angrily as he dwells on it. He is considering retiring. Meanwhile, Jackson becomes more frustrated about his work for the alien, who also isn't much of a help and only wants to know what happened to his mate.

Memory retrieval technology

Nem reads Jackson's mind.

Meanwhile, Dr. Janet Fraiser again examines the team and realizes that they were all manipulated. They are then studied and it turns out that their memories are false and that they are all programmed to be afraid of going back to the planet again.

Oannes

Carter's memory of the mission.

Carter then agrees to be hypnotized by Dr. James MacKenzie, where she remembers the mission again. She also then remembers that they were all in an alien room and she finally realizes that the memories of Jackson's death are false. So the team mounts a rescue mission and returns to the planet. They reach the ocean where they last saw Jackson, but there is no sign of him. However, O'Neill says he won't leave without Jackson this time.

Jackson has agreed to undergo the memory-retrieval technique, and reveals that the alien is an Ohnes, and that the Goa'uld Belus killed Omoroca. Learning this, Nem agrees to let Jackson go and suggests that his race may someday ally itself with the Ohnes. Nem says "In time, perhaps." and that in time, Jackson will learn the fate of his wife Sha're. Nem then leaves, and Jackson returns to Earth discussing with the others what happened while he was away including his memorial service.

Notable quotes[]

O'Neill: What, what is that?
Fraiser: It's a penlight. I'm sorry, you must be photosensitive.
O'Neill: Ya think?

(At Jackson's memorial service)
O'Neill: Daniel Jackson made this place, happen. As a member of SG-1, he was our voice, our conscience. He was a very courageous man. He was a good man. For those of us lucky enough to know him, he was also a friend.
Hammond: We commend Daniel Jackson's spirit to the Universe he opened up for us. I pledge to continue our journey of discovery in his memory. May he rest in peace.

(O'Neill is playing hockey and slams the hockey stick through the window of one of a car.)
O'Neill: Come get this damn car out of here!
(Hammond walks over.)
Hammond: What on your mind, Colonel?
O'Neill: Retirement, actually.
Hammond: You don't mean that.
O'Neill: I think I do.
Hammond: Well, I can't let you do that at the moment. I've got an assignment for SG-1. Dr. Jackson's apartment needs to be closed by Stargate personnel. National security aside, you're probably the closest thing he had to a family. It's not an order, it's a request.
O'Neill: Yes, sir.
Hammond: Why don't you come join the others in the back?
O'Neill: Yes, sir.
(Hammond leads O'Neill back to the house.)
Hammond: You know that's my car, don't you?
O'Neill: You should get that window fixed.

(reading from Jackson's diary from Abydos)
Carter: Oh wow, look at these. Expedition journals, one for each planet we visited. (pulling out a journal) One for Abydos. "Colonel O'Neill thinks I'm a geek. I have no idea how to get us back. I'll never get paid." (Carter turns the page) Oh wow, he must have written this right after we got back. "Sha're is gone, Jack says we'll find her. If anyone can, he can."
O'Neill: Ah, come on, that's his diary. I mean, what's he going to think if—
(O'Neill stops, both he and Carter look uneasy. She puts the book back on the shelf.)
Carter: I wonder what they're going to do with all this stuff.
O'Neill: Maybe give it to a museum. Or start one.

McKenzie: I've had a great deal of success with hypnosis.
O'Neill: Hypnosis. You know, I'm not a big fan of that bark like a chicken, cluck like a dog stuff.

Jackson: This is a long story.
Carter: Yeah, I'll bet.
O'Neill: Tell us about it over sushi.
Jackson: That's funny. I will after I get some sleep.
O'Neill: Ah... home. Yeah, about that apartment.
Jackson: Oh, you didn't!
Carter: The, ah, day after the memorial service.
Jackson: Memorial service?!
Carter: The Colonel said some really nice things.
Jackson: He, he did! He did?

Notes[]

  • This episode was originally named "Funeral for a Friend".

Goofs[]

  • At the very beginning, when the team returns, MSgt. Walter Harriman is told to call a medical team, and he says over the intercom "Medical team to the Stargate room!" when in fact the room containing the Stargate is called the Embarkation room, and is known as such throughout the entire series. However, it is still actually referred to as the 'Gate room' many times, including Dr. Daniel Jackson specifically using the name in "2010" at which point a tour guide disagreed and suggested it was actually known as the 'Embarkation room', playing on the rare use of the latter term in the series.
  • Jackson and Nem refer to Omoroca being on Earth 4,000 years ago, and Jackson mentions that she didn't fail in her task because she helped inspire the eventual Tau'ri Rebellion against the Goa'uld. However, the Tau'ri rebelled and buried their Stargate around 3,000 B.C., or 5,000 years before Jackson met Nem.
