Evacuation ships were built on the planet Novus to carry it's population to another planet after natural disasters on Novus led to the destruction of the Stargate, preventing evacuation through that means. They were not capable of faster-then-light travel. It was predicted that it would take several hundreds years to reach their destination. (SGU: "Epilogue")
