Drawing straws is a Tau'ri method of delegating responsibility to someone in a group when no one has volunteered. This is performed by having long objects, such as straws, and after ensuring one is shorter than the others, have them held out where they all appear the same length and the members of the group each pick one. Whoever picked the shortest is the one that is now responsible for the task.

In order to decide who, between Dr. Rodney McKay, Peter Grodin or Lt. Lou Miller, would go out into space to reroute power of the damage circuits of the Lagrangian Point satellite, a task that wouldn't be safe or easy given the lack of anything to hold on to, Grodin suggested they draw straws. Lou broke a pencil and held it out. Grodin choose a long piece, McKay a short piece and the one remaining for Miller was longer than McKay's, meaning the task fell to Rodney.
