Debra Carter (née Nielsen) was a female Tau'ri and wife of Major General Jacob Carter and mother of Colonel Samantha Carter and Mark Carter.
Biography[]
Background information[]
During a trip to Germany before her senior year of college, she met Jacob on a late night train ride. Two years later, he proposed and they were married. (RPG: "Friends and Foes: Stargate Season Two")
She gave up smoking cigarettes while she was pregnant with Mark in 1971. (SG1: "Moebius Squared")
When Sam was twelve, Jacob was supposed to go pick her up at the airport but didn't, forcing Mrs. Carter to take a taxi and she was killed in a car accident. Sam and Mark blamed Jacob for her death. Eventually, Sam forgave her father, although Mark didn't until after many years of estrangement. (SG1: "Seth", "The Devil You Know")
During Sam's childhood, her mother sang "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" to her. (SG1: "Grace")
Alternate timelines[]
- In an alternate timeline accidentally created by SG-1, she was named Eleanor instead of Debra. She likewise married Jacob Carter and they had a daughter named Samantha in 1968. However, Eleanor was widowed during the Vietnam War in December 1969 when Jacob's plane was shot down by the Viet Cong and his parachute failed. Jacob's body was brought home by his wingman and close friend Lt. George S. Hammond, who had tried unsuccessfully to save him (it was later speculated that without his advance knowledge of his continued survival due to SG-1's trip back to 1969 in this timeline, Lieutenant Hammond didn't have the nerve to push himself far enough to rescue Jacob in this version of events). While Sam was growing up, Eleanor was overly protective of her. Her daughter told the Sam of our timeline that she had had a hard time convincing her mother to even let her get a car and claimed that she had never even considered joining the Air Force as she knew her mother would have "freaked out" if she had. She smoked for most of her adult life and died of cancer at the age of 61 in 2003. Sam later named her daughter Ellie in her mother's honor. (SG1: "Moebius Squared")
