Dave Sheppard is a male Tau'ri. He is the son of Patrick Sheppard, a utilities mogul, and an unnamed woman. He is also the brother of Lt. Colonel John Sheppard, and the former brother-in-law of Nancy Sheppard.

Background information[]
In the far, distant past, at least one Ancient became an ancestor in the Sheppard family line, passing down the Ancient Technology Activation gene. Dave's brother John is one of the strongest ATA gene carriers in the Stargate Program, and it can therefore be assumed that Dave also has the gene. (SGA: "Rising")
The Sheppard brothers were estranged for an unknown time prior to their father's death in 2008. (SGA: "Outcast")
2005[]
When the Atlantis expedition sent a data burst to Earth with all of their data and a request for aid in the coming battle with the Wraith, John chose not to send a video message to his brother and/or father. This showed that he did not consider himself to be close to either of them and didn't feel it was necessary to send a last message to them, despite there being a very real possibility that he would be killed. 2008[]
After the death of his father, Dave contacted what he believed to be his brother's Unit Commander at Peterson Air Force Base, stating he wasn't sure if John got the message since those messages didn't always seem to reach him. Implying there might have been some communication between them after John joined the Atlantis expedition.
When John, Ronon Dex, and the Human-form Replicator of Ava Dixon were leaving the wake, Dave confronted John about his level of expectation in regards to their father's will, which he did not know the contents of. Specifically, he wanted to know if John intended to challenge it. John denied it by replying that Dave had 'nothing to worry about'.
Dave informed John that their father had always regretted their estrangement over John's choice to join the United States Air Force. Later, John went back to Dave's house and was invited inside to take care of some 'unfinished business'. (SGA: "Outcast")
