Doctor Collins was part of the team investigating the Dorandan firing unit.

2005[]
While conducting a routine experiment, Dr. Rodney McKay sent him into the extraction chamber to figure out what was going wrong. Tragically, Collins was exposed to hard radiation which cost him his life. His body was later recovered by McKay, Dr. Radek Zelenka and Lt. Colonel John Sheppard and taken back to Atlantis for an autopsy by Dr. Carson Beckett who later explained that Collins had died due to the radiation which had caused burns to over ninety percent of his body.
