Plot

6 Jaffa look upon a disguised SG-1.

After an experiment to remove Teal'c's symbiote and maintain his body with drugs fails, he reluctantly asks Major General George S. Hammond and the others for assistance. He explains that he has a family he left behind Chulak to join Stargate Command, but his son Rya'c is scheduled to receive a Goa'uld larva, which will make him dependent on the alien symbiotes. He asks the SG-1 for assistance and when they refuse, he tries to travel to Chulak on his own. Hammond stops him, but after Colonel Jack O'Neill informs Hammond about Rya'c and seeing Teal'c’s determination, and with the promise of recovering a larva and undermining the Jaffa's belief in the divinity of the Goa'uld, Hammond eventually agrees.

SG-1 finds the mark of the Shol'va on Teal'c's home.

SG-1 returns to Chulak, disguised as scholars of the court of Apophis. After fooling the guards at the Stargate, they make their way Teal'c's old home (now burned down) they make contact with Bra'tac, another Jaffa rebel and Teal'c's old mentor. Since being declared "Shol'va" (outcast, cursed, condemned), Teal'c's family has been demoted in Jaffa society and live in a primitive camp. Bra'tac takes O'Neill and Teal'c to Teal'c's family while Captain Samantha Carter and Dr. Daniel Jackson watch the Gate. They spot priests delivering a container of Goa'uld larva to a nearby temple and follow.

Teal'c fights the Priest.

Teal'c interrupts the implantation ceremony, the prim'ta, and rescues his son. Drey'auc is none too happy with the low straits that Teal'c's actions have brought their family to. Worse, Teal'c’s son is suffering from the equivalent of scarlet fever and only a Goa'uld symbiote can "cure" him. Jackson and Carter have sneaked into the temple and taken a larva. Jackson wants to kill the remaining larvae to prevent them from taking human hosts in the future, but Carter argues that it is immoral to kill them as they are now. Jackson appears to agree but as they are leaving he shoots the tank, killing them all. Before they can get back it is too late - Rya'c is on the verge of death and Teal'c gives up his symbiote to give it to his son.

Bratac 1

Bra'tac salutes SG-1.

Without his symbiote, Teal'c is dying as his immune system shuts down. Jackson and Carter show up and they give the captured symbiote to Teal'c. As he begins to recover they head for the Stargate. Once Teal'c is strong enough he says goodbye to his son and wife, telling them to claim he kidnapped them against their will. After a brief reconciliation, Drey'auc leaves with Rya'c, and Bra'tac takes them to the Gate pretending he has taken SG-1 prisoner. Bra'tac takes out the guards and priests at the Gate, and then stays behind as SG-1 makes their escape.

Notable Quotes

Hammond: How many of these other Jaffa can you be sure of?
O'Neill: We're pretty sure of at least... one guy.
Hammond: One?
Jackson: Yes, and, and where there's one there has to be more than... one.
Hammond: Oh, absolutely.

Teal'c: (referring to SG-1) Warriors of great skill and cunning.
Carter: Oh, Teal'c, that's...
Teal'c: My first teacher, Bra'tac. The greatest Jaffa master I've ever known.
O'Neill: It's an honor to meet you, Sir.
(walks past him. Looks at Carter.)
Bra'tac: You. You were among the warriors who defeated the palace guard at Chulak? A human woman?
Carter: Hey, I'll have you know I keep my...
Bra'tac: (towards Jackson) And you? A warrior of great skill and cunning? (grabs Jackson's arm and bites it) I could snap you like kindling! How could you bring these hashak with you!
O'Neill: Hey, hey, hey! Who're you calling a hassack? What's a hassack?"
Bra'tac: You challenge me hashak?
O'Neill: Ah, no. I don't think we came to fight you.
Bra'tac: A shame.
(Bra'tac turns and swings back to knock O'Neill over. O'Neill grabs the staff weapon and knocks him on the floor with the staff poised over him.)
O'Neill: We're here on a mission. If you don't want to be a part of it, just say so.
Bra'tac: (laughs) You choose your friends well, Teal'c. Though were I a hundred years younger, it might not have been quite so easy.
O'Neill: You're over a hundred years old? God, I'm sorry.
(Jack reaches down to help him up but Bra'tac grabs him and dumps him on the ground)
Bra'tac: A hundred and thirty three.
O'Neill: You must work out.

Teal'c: If we are discovered, you will be brought to Apophis along with us.
O'Neill: Well, we'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it.
Bra'tac: No. The bridge is too well guarded.
O'Neill: No, actually there, I was using a cliché that...

Bra'tac: Teal'c tells me your world is without gods. Difficult to imagine.
O'Neill: Well it's not without gods. A lot of people believe there's a God. Not everyone believes in the same God, the same way but... let's just say nobody believes in anyone with glowing eyes and a snake in his head.
Bra'tac: Then you serve no one?
O'Neill: I serve the SGC under a General Hammond.
Bra'tac: So this Hammond is...?
O'Neill: Just a man. A very good, very bald man. From Texas.

(sneaking into a Jaffa temple)
Jackson: Bingo. Goa'uld larva.
Carter: Here in the open like this, no guards?
Jackson: Well, who on Chulak needs to steal one?
Carter: We do.
Jackson: Right.

(preparing to grab a Goa'uld symbiote out of a tank)
Carter: Okay, we can do this.
Jackson: I'm ready.
Carter: Okay. On three. One, two, three.
(Carter doesn't put her hand in)
Jackson: Okay, on four.
Carter: Four.

O'Neill: All right, here's the plan.
Bra'tac: You will do as I say.
O'Neill: Right.

Bra'tac: Not bad for a man of 133.
O'Neill: Not bad at all.
Carter: What will you do? When the priests come to, they'll tell Apophis that you betrayed them.
Bra'tac: I suppose, I will cross that bridge when I come to it.
