Benton was a Major in the United States Air Force and the Leader of SG-9.

2002[]
When he and his team went on a mission to Latona to re-establish diplomatic relations with that planet's inhabitants. He was killed by Jaffa during a Svarog's attack on the planet where it was revealed that he had suffered a fatal staff blast wound to the chest. (SG1: "The Sentinel")
