"Beast of Burden" is the seventh episode of the fifth season of Stargate SG-1.

Synopsis[]

Chaka and other Unas are kidnapped and sold as slaves on another planet. While SG-1 observes, Dr. Daniel Jackson and Colonel Jack O'Neill are captured, and Major Samantha Carter and Teal'c plan to break them out.

Plot[]

Burrock's World

A camera left behind on P3X-888 records the capture of the Unas Chaka, whom Dr. Daniel Jackson befriended a year earlier. The camera also records the gate address of the planet where the kidnappers took Chaka. SG-1 goes to the address and discovers a planet where the people use Unas as a slave race, declining in vigor due to centuries of inbreeding.

Posing as traders and meeting the villagers and Chaka's captor Burrock, SG-1 learns that the Unas had been the masters of the humans when they were controlled by "those with the glowing eyes" (the Goa'uld), and with the tables turned are allegedly better treated as slaves than the humans were. Negotiations break down over price after Burrock discovers that Chaka is valued by Jackson.

SG-1 tries to free Chaka but Colonel Jack O'Neill and Jackson are captured and imprisoned for "beast stealing," a capital offense. Jackson attempts to convince Burrock to release the Unas but Burrock tortures him and O'Neill with a Rod of Anguish and kills an Unas with O'Neill's P90.

Teal'c and Major Samantha Carter use C-4 to destroy the cart of water, and set a fire in the village that requires most of the rest of the villagers to help extinguish it. While Teal'c distracts the guards, Carter helps O'Neill and Jackson escape, and free Chaka and some of the other Unas in the process.

The Unas' human masters attempt to recapture SG-1 and the escaped Unas on their way to the Stargate. Having helped liberate his captured human friends, Chaka kills Burrock. Jackson then realizes Chaka thought he was the one helping them escape, as he intended to stay and free the rest of the Unas the whole time.

Notable quotes[]

Jackson: As you know, over the past year, I have been studying the Unas of P3X-888. I've made some amazing discoveries about their social structure and their culture. I've also been able to categorize almost seventy individual words from their language. But, during a review of the latest batch of digital images, I came across this. (He turns on the tape.) These men, whoever they are, abducted the Unas I refer to as Chaka.
Carter: That's the one that kidnapped you?
Jackson: Same one. Their dress indicates preindustrialisation, but they don't seem to have any Jaffa tattoos, so the presence of Goa'uld weapons seems contradictory.
Teal'c: Indeed.
O'Neill: What would they want with an Unas?
Jackson: I don't know. But I'd like to find out.
Hammond: What are you suggesting?
Jackson: Well like Jack said, I'd like to find out what they want an Unas.
O'Neill: For the record, I don't care. (everyone looks at him in silence) I care.
Jackson: I also think it might be relevant to investigate how these men got Goa'uld weapons and from where.
Teal'c: They may have other Goa'uld technology as well.
O'Neill: Now see? That I really care about.
Jackson: And if possible, I'd like to make every effort to rescue Chaka.
O'Neill: The Unas?
Jackson: Remember most of the Unas we've encountered have had Goa'uld symbiotes controlling them. Chaka is an un-Goa'ulded Unas, an intelligent being who learned to trust humans because of me.
O'Neill: And?
Jackson: (Turns back to screen) These images were taken just prior to the abduction. See, every time I went back with SG-11 to retrieve the video footage, I would leave Chaka a gift. (He stops the tape at the point where Chaka offers the man the energy bar.) It's uh, it's an energy bar. It's something that helped me break through when we first met. I left the bait for their trap.

O'Neill: Any ideas?
Jackson: Well let's see how far honesty gets us.
O'Neill: (not so sure) Okay.

Burrock: No one has come through the Chappa'ai for as long as anyone can remember.
O'Neill: Well now you'll have a story to tell your grandkids.

Burrock: My name is Burrock.
Jackson: My name is Daniel Jackson, this is Colonel Jack O'Neill.
Burrock: "Colonel?"
Jackson: Yes, it means he's our head... trader.
O'Neill: Head trader?
Burrock: I like that!! Then you can call me Colonel Burrock. It is our custom to welcome visitors with a drink. Will you join me?
O'Neill: And it is our custom to drink. Of course. (Burrock walks away)
O'Neill: Honesty, huh?
Jackson: We're traders, we traded, we trade... (motions towards Burrock)... trading.

O'Neill: Daniel. I'm not going to get into a firefight over this right now.

O'Neill: Daniel, do you want to go out and catch a couple of Unas? Trade them for Chaka, is that it?
Jackson: I think you're missing the point.
O'Neill: Am I?

Jackson: Sam, it's Daniel. Do you read?
Carter: Daniel, you okay?
Jackson: Ah, I've been better.
Carter: Colonel O'Neill?
Jackson: Oh, physically fine. But I'm, I'm not expecting a birthday present any time soon.

Jackson: Jack, it's not his fault.
O'Neill: Daniel, I'm chained up in a mad man's barn with a bunch of unas. Who's to blame is not at the top of my list of concerns... just yet.

O'Neill: Look, we're not going to tell you anything so you might as well just let us go. We'll go back to where we came from, you can go on doing what you do so well.
Burrock: Because now I know for certain, there is more out there.
O'Neill: Yeah, I know, the grass always looks cleaner. Fact is, there's a whole bunch of bad guys with glowing eyes out there, and you really don't wanna mess with them.

Burrock: Impressive weapon. But not as efficient as a fire stick. It seems to stop working after it's been fired for a while. I assume that's what these are for. Tell me how to make it work again.
O'Neill: Give it to me, I'll show you.

(Carter sneaks into the barn while Teal'c is outside shooting at people)
O'Neill: Where's Teal'c?
Carter: Trying to be popular.

O'Neill: You just sent them out to start a war.
Jackson: Well, it was his choice. I told them they didn't have to kill.
O'Neill: You think he understands that?
Jackson: They know what freedom is, and they are willing to fight for it. They deserve a chance.

Notes[]

  • The village set was left from the television series Bordertown that aired from 1989 to 1991. It was previously used for the episode "A Hundred Days" and was intended to be used for the Stargate: Atlantis episode "Irresponsible" but the set was in such disrepair that the shoot had to be moved elsewhere.
