The Alavans bare a resemblance to the Basque people of Spain and France. Dr. Avery Freeman hypothesizes that around the time Earth's Alpha Gate was buried, a Goa'uld transplanted humans from the Basque country to the planet Alava.

History[]

The Alavans were brought to Alava by their god Mari. They knew of Goa'uld System Lords from their off-world traders. They weren't thralls of any System Lord. Mari, her Prime and Jaffa did live on their world underneath a mountain near their Stargate and they saw her as their god and worshipped her, they didn't however, view her as a System Lord. She was largely content to leave the Alavan's alone to do what they wanted and brought good weather and ensured bounty to them with her Touchstone device. She only got angry when groups with more advanced technology came through the Stargate. (RPG: "The Eyes of the Storm")

In 2002, Phoenix-1 encountered an Alavan vendor in the souk on Parva named Ikusi, who had also been a spy for the low-level System Lord Nephthys. [2] (RPG: "Field of Reeds", "The Eyes of the Storm")

After witnessing Alavan traders on several worlds, Phoenix Site sent Phoenix-3 with Dr. Avery Freeman and then again with her with another team to Alava to get to know the people. After both visits, Mari took captive some Alavans, including one of their leaders named Kemen, and Dr. Freeman.

Should Mari be driven off or killed, the Alavans ask for her Touchstone so they can continue ensuring bounty to their world. (RPG: "The Eyes of the Storm")

Culture[]

The Alavans mostly lived along Alava's coastlines, though a town called Herri is further inland and is closest to their Stargate.

Alavans have wood-chopping competitions called Aizkolaritza and have trade festivals.

Some Alavan dishes include Talo, Gerezi, and salted fish. While Corn, which is needed for Talo, isn't native to Alava, their traders get them off-world.

The Alavans have tales of Mari which suggest that she is most jealous when outsiders bring technology to Alava. (RPG: "The Eyes of the Storm")
